IP Address Problem or SpyWare?

Hello,

Hopefully someone can assist me.
Up until recently I had a perfectly good functioning LAN & internet
connection between my 2 PCs (W2K). Now I only have the LAN connection, but
can no longer

access the internet via LAN from the Client PC !! Internet connection to
the Host is no problem and if I connect direct to the Client PC (take it off
the LAN), I also have an internet connection.

LAN Setup:
On both LANs I'm using "Client for MS Network, File & Print Sharing, NetBui
and TCP/IP". If I delete the NetBui I lose the LAN connection altogether.
"Enable Internet Connection Sharing" & "Enable on-demand Dialing" on the
internet connection are activated. I had static addresses on both machines
with the same SubNet Mask (255.255.255.0) and on the Client I used the
Default Gateway address of the Host.
IE connection for the Client is set to "LAN" and I'm using "Automatically
detect settings" - nothing else is checked.
The Client can ping it's own IP address (192.168.1.2) and Name ("second")
and those of the Host PC. The Host can NOT ping it's own IP address
(192.168.1.1) and Name ("computer"), but can ping those of the Client.
Event Viewer tells me, when I attempt to connection to the internet with the
Client :"The browser has received a server announcement indicating that the
computer SECOND is a master browser, but this computer is not a master
browser." or "The master browser has received a server announcement from the
computer COMPUTER that believes that it is the master browser for the domain
on transport NetBT_Tcpip_{226E041E-C240-4507-. The master browser is stopping
or an election is being forced."

What I have done to date to attempt to fix this:
I have played with all combinations of addresses including automatic
assigned addresses without any luck.
I have uninstalled the adapters and reinstalled the latest drivers (3COM
Ethernet 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905B-TX).
Re-installed IE 6.0 (+ latest updates) - no results
Deinstalled and reinstalled Norton Antivirus & Firewall (ensured that the
other PC is included in the exemption list).
Ran Micorosoft AntiSpyware and XoftSpy. Found and deleted a few SpyWare
bugs - no result.
Ran HiJackThis, posted to a forum and deleted suggested files - no result.
Ran IspFix to see if the problem was in the Winsock - no result

Is this a Virus/SpyWare problem or have I received an MS update that has set
things askew ?

Grateful for any clues ??

first thing I would do is ping a public ip like 4.2.2.1. If it works, then ping yahoo.com. or try this page,
