Are there any special steps that need to be taken to
connect a 3.11 computer to an XP LAN (if it is even
posible...) Thank you in advance.

Yes, you can network all versions of windows.
But you will need to change some of the defaults.

Back in the early triassic, windows networking as implimented in win3.1
used the NetBEUI protocol by default. Look at the protocols in use
on your 3.11 box to confirm this.

In the 21st century, XP uses the TCP/IP protocol by default.

For windows networking to function, you need a common protocol on all
the machines. And then, I'd recommend removing the other unused protocols
entirely.

You are at a crossroads.
You need to either:

1) install NetBEUI on XP ( retrograde );
or
2) Install TCP/IP on win3.11 ( preferred.)

Now, for a 'quick fix', option (1) is the easier.
Option (2) will require a bit more work and configuration.
But not much.

Taking each in turn:

Option (1):
=======
HOW TO: Install NetBEUI on Windows XP

Option (2):
========
You need to download and install TCP/IP-32 for for Win3.11:

How to Obtain TCP/IP-32 3.11b for Windows for Workgroups (Q99891)
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q99891

UPDATE.TXT: TCP/IP-32 3.11b for Windows for Workgroups
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q122544

If you choose to use TCP/IP, then I'd recommend you then make the
following
manual configurations:

Specify an IP address:
XP: 192.168.0.1 , Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0
Win3.11: 192.168.0.2 , Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0

Then, ensure all the machines are on the same workgroup.
Then delete all un-used protocols from all machines.
