Lack of client for microsoft networks

I am trying to set up a home network and have come to a stopping point. I do
have some networking background but I have obviously overlooked something(s).
I am networking 2 desktop computers both with Windows XP Professional SP2.
I can ping in both directions, but cant see either computer in My Network
Places. After looking in Local Area Connection properties, I noticed there
is no client for microsoft networks listed. Windows XP help states that this
is loaded by default, but it is not on either computer. I have a feeling
this is the cause of the problem, but I have tried to load it manually, with
no luck. It does not show up as an available option when I try to install a
client component. Please help.

Thanks

Russelle,

Are you saying that, in Local Area Connection - Properties, when you select
Install, then Client, then Add, you don't have Client for Microsoft Networks in
the Select Network Client list?
