Lack of buttons

LOL... Yeap, it's that NNTP newsreader you just got working
(OutlookExpress) which has a spellchecker for sending appends to this
newsgroup as opposed to the HTML interface which doesn't. I can see your
still using the HTML interface, so try Outlook Express to send as well as
read.

I suppose you could copy and paste your appends to a text editor first for
a spell-check, but that sounds like a royal pain.

Well, I have tried, Dave, but whenever I do it tells me that there's no
default mail client or somesuch; and sometimes Outlook Express hangs as well.
So I couldn't be bothered with it, and gave up. I've settled for reading new
posts in Outlook Express, and posting via Internet Explorer.
I think it's what they call a 'work around', in the trade!!!!

I wonder if MS actually reads this newsgroup or we just beating a rug!

I understand now about MVPs, but I was under the impression that Joe
Faulhaber is an official Microsoft wiz? At least, he spoke with authority
about the update button. Is he actually Microsoft's representative in here?

I'm not a OE expert by any means, but I believe that refers to your Account
Defaults so it knows which ISP to send appends through:

In OE, Tools > Accounts
then tab to Mail and set a default e-mail server (example pop.juno.com,
this information was provided by my ISP... Juno in this case)

It would be a shame for you to have spent so much time on this and not get
it fully functional. If I'm wrong about these defaults, I'm sure someone
will correct me... LOL.. but it's the way my OE is set up and it seems to
work just fine.

I got as far as the 'mail' tab, but then .... 'set a default e-mail server'?
Information provided by my ISP? In my case, AOL? But I don't know who to ask,
or how to ask them, and even if I did, I don't know what question to ask them.

Thanks for trying Dave, but I've spent far too long fiddling with this
stupid system already, and I've cobbled together a weird kind of combination
that works, so I'll settle for that. It just isn't worth the bother. If I
spend any more time on it, I'll be jumping onto the table and calling myself
a teapot (or worse).

Hi all,

I don't know if I'm a wiz, but I am a tester on the WD product team. And I
know a bunch of us on the product team are lurking on these NGs. Not all of
us post (we have lots of code to work on), but your feedback and peer
support is hugely valuable to us.

I cut&paste posts from these NGs into bugs in our systems all the time, and
Steve Dodson (another WD team member) is currently asking for information
from anyone who can't get updated from the 1.0.0.0 definitions as well -
according to spynet telemetry, there's some people like that out there, but
we have no idea who they are!

Engel - I kinda goofed and posted an internal build version number, but we
are progressing on getting you folks an updated version of WD, but I
honestly don't know and shouldn't guess when that will be. I can say that
we are shipping signatures all the time, and new engines to you monthly,
which I think is the most complicated, coolest, and probably most robust
code from Micrsoft (but I may be partial).

Thanks for trying Windows Defender, and please keep the feedback coming,
Joe

No--Defender will probably add typos.

I don't disagree--this isn't a simple solution.

Microsoft expects this application to be running on darn near every install
of Windows out there--either OEM supported, or Microsoft supported. It
needs to be usable by every Windows user--and all of us know some Windows
users who are not great technical wizards. It needs to have a low enough
support burden that it isn't going to be a large cost center for the OEMs or
for Microsoft's support staff.

I don't think the average user is going to need to find the information that
is in the logs--but I'm happy to see this dialog, and I know Microsoft is
reading, and perhaps there'll be changes over time.
