Lack of buttons

Hi,

This message is intended to the Microsoft developers.

I would like to have two buttons on the interface to perform a quick or full
scan.

I don't find it user-friendly to have to use the drop down menu at the top.

In general, I don't find that bar user friendly at all. I preferred the
AntiSpyware user interface to that of the current Windows Defender.

Also, I think it would be good to be able to update the interface as well as
the engine and the definitions.

Thanks,

Tom

Hello Tom,

Well, tomorrow is a Download day, maybe your wishes became a reality, I read
other thread and is a new WD version on the test line. Cross your fingers ;-)

that new wd version will be installed with updates? or will we have to
uninstall this one and install a new one?

There haven't been automatic updates to the UI portion of the code so far in
beta2. However, the past is not always an accurate predictor of the future.
In the past, we've needed to do a new download from the download
center--just install over the version already in place.

(personally, I wouldn't predict a new version tomorrow--that's security
patch Tuesday, and I don't think Microsoft would do a release then.)

I'm nearly certain that you will have to uninstall/reinstall.

That is why I asked to have the GUI part of WD updated as well as the
signatures and engine.

Thanks,

Tom

Will you let us know in here when the newer beta version is out?
and repeat- is it better to uninstall the old and install the new or does it
matter?
thanks

If nobody else notices it, I'll post--but I'm sure it'll be big news in
these groups. I meant to post about the update process--you can just
download the new version and run the installer--it'll take care of the old
version in the process--no uninstall needed.

I don't know what Engel's source is--I have no information about a new
version, but I've also been on vacation for a few weeks.

We also need (as I've posted elsewhere but repeat more appropriately here) a
button to check the Defender events log. The present convoluted system you
have to go through to check Defender events as part of the whole Windows
system is absolutely crazy! I've only just, today, found out how to do it
(thanks to Dave M).

We need a log button. Click it - and here's what Defender has been up to,
for those who wish or need to check. Surely this is essential?

I agree!

I'll give it a try and see how it goes.

I just checked on the Microsoft download site and the old April 12th version
is still there...

Thanks,

Tom

MVPs do not work for Microsoft. It is an award Microsoft gives to people
who provide consistently useful help to users. See:

The event viewer is extensible--you can create your own views of the event
logs, including one which filters for just Windows Defender related entries.
I've posted instructions for how to do this in the past I believe--I'll have
to see if I can find that old message.

As Frank Saunders mentions, I don't work for Microsoft.

I don't believe that I necessarily know more than Engel--all that I stated
was that I don't know of any such release.

Engel and I are both interested bystanders--not insiders.

Hi Bill,

Is this what are you thinking:

right-click My Computer, choose manage
click the + in front of event viewer
click the System event log
click view, choose filter
Choose WinDefend in the dropdown for Source.

Click apply

Scroll through the messages--open any that have yellow triangles, for
sure--you may find that these events are for unknown or not yet classified
objects--they shouldn't be for known bad objects.

No--that's for looking at just Defender messages in a manual way. It is
possible to create a console which has a separate line for Windows
Defender--just as though it was a separate log, by creating a filtered view
of the system event log and saving the console with that change.

Maybe this one, sound familiar to you?:

FWIW, you can actually do this yourself. I've done this--made the filtered
view a separately listed line. Now--how did I do that??

I can't recall a quick step by step, but the info here:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/microsoft_management_console.htm

is probably more than sufficient to make you able to duplicate what I've
done. As I recall I needed to go to author mode and save the changed
console--hint, while experimenting, it might be best to choose a different
name than the standard console name. I chose the standard name-I see my
entry when I run eventvwr.msc explicitly, but not, for example, in My
Computer, manage.

The complexity and awkwardness of these workarounds that Engel and Bill are
suggesting (merely emphasises, in my view, the need for a simple, single
'Defender log' button.

Yes, I now know how to filter Defender activity in the event viewer - but
I'd never have figured it out without Dave M's helpful post. And even if
there is some conviluted way of setting up one's own system, that isn't the
point I'm making. The goal should be transparency and ease of use, with a
minimum of confusion. A Defender log button is necessary, for the millions of
people who know as little as I do.
