KV8-X...adding IDE HD to SATA

J

John Lowe

Am going round in circles.
My new system WINXP, ASUS KV8-X, Maxtor 160 gb, SATA, etc.
System works fine with just the SATA disk in place. Problem...I want to add
another HD, an IDE Deskstar, as a "slave", which was on my old system. It
has old files, progs on etc.
Have tried several times and variations but each time the BIOS boots from or
tries to boot from the IDE drive if it is connected.
In the BIOS Boot Configuration the boot options are Floppy, IDE drive and
CD Rom or "Disabled" if the IDE drive is connected. If there is no IDE
drive connected it reads Floppy, VIA 6420, CD rom and "Disabled".

I have tried setting IDE to Cable Select and setting 2nd boot to "Disabled".
It didn't like that at all and asked to reboot and reset boot device.

Nowhere in the AMI Bios, which I have just flashed to the latest version,
1006, does it give me an option to boot from the SATA drive when the IDE
drive is connected. When the IDE drive is not connected the BIOS shows no
hard drives at all...(which I realise is correct as the SATA is a type of
SCSII drive !

I don't want to set up a RAID, or at least I don't think I do I just want
the IDE to be a slave to the SATS.

Hope this is clear. Many thanks to anyone with patience and understanding
who can assist.

I have this same setup and it works fine. It is kind of wierd at first to
get used to. Under the boot config. where it lists you IDE drive just click
on it and you will have the option to change the drive and you should see
the sata drive at that point just select it and you should be good to go.
First some reason periodically when i turn the system on it will give me an
error message about no (not sure if this right wording trying to go by
memory) ntsc, meaning it can not find the correct boot sector and not boot
up. If you ever get this message just go into bios and repete putting the
sata drive as the boot drive. I do not know why once in a while it just
seems to change back wanting to try and boot from the ide drive. Other than
that works like a charm. hope that helps.
