Interesting. Would it be possible to make a scanner with more than one
f stop where you could have the normal speedy mode and a special slower
mode to help with curved film or to maximize image quality?
Yes it would certainly be possible.

The aperture on the drum scanner is the sensing aperture, which is the
equivalent of the CCD pixel size.

Of course adjusting the lens aperture will have an effect on resolution,
but not quite as directly as it does on the drum scanner.
