knocking noise whilst scanning

Can anyone tell me what might cause a knocking/banging noise during the scan
process?

It also causes the scan to come out "smeared".
It only seems to happen after I've been using the scanner for a certain
amount of time and if I turn the scanner upside down then right it the noise
seems to stop for a short while.

Its an Agfa Snapscan e50 if that helps.

Run a few scans with nothing on the platen, and watch what happens when
it goes clunk.

Sounds like the drive belt is jumping a tooth.
Perhaps the shaft that the scanhead slides on has become sticky and needs a
clean and lube or the belt has become loose.
Open and check.
