kill autocomplete reminder

I've unchecked all the autocomplete boxes in the autocomplete panel in the content tab, and unchecked inline autocomplete and profile assistant in the advanced tab

I guess it's obvious I don't want IE to autocomplete anything

But when I fill out a form (like the google searchbox), IE pops up a widow telling me autocomplete is off and if I want to turn it on (like in http://devil.members.easyspace.com/autocomplete.jpg

I don't want autocomplete on AND I want IE to stop asking me

What's the secret setting/registry edit/other trick?

This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware, parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.

Nope. All the usual (and freshly updated) spywarecleaners don't find anything. AVG AntiVirus doesn't find anything either, and ZoneAlarm doesn't detect any suspicious in- or outgoing activity

The reminder is not linked to any website or type of form. Google searchbox, Babelfish translation, Asta-killer.com, PubMed.com, every site with any type of form asks me to turn autocomplete on

Does anyone know where the autocomplete reminder settings are stored? Is it a simple registry key that's on or off?

If this is WinXP, look at (probably not the exact names) Ctrl Panel> User
Accounts> [affected user account]> Password management. Anything there?

Nothing there. Just an option to set a windows login password and a link to the .NET Passport site (to change your name, age, sex, location, occupation and other personal data which microsoft likes to 'share' with other companies), but nothing about auto-completing

I installed IE6 sp1 to replace the non-service-packed IE6 but that didn't help. It kept all settings, including the autocomplete reminder

Maybe I have to make IE forget all settings and configure them from scratch?

I don't think so. I think I can remember reading of some user's account
of hacking a .dll to do what you want but can't find it using Google Groups.
It would be in group:microsoft.*.ie6.* or group:microsoft.*.ie5.*

It might be found with this search but I don't have enough time to check
all the threads it finds:

autocomplete forms disable group:microsoft.*.ie6.*

Another reason that I would be hesitant about doing such an in depth
analysis of that search is that I am not sure that this particular prompt
is the one which that particular technique I am recalling involved.

Unfortunately most of the relevant hits are only single article threads
(IOW complaints about the functionality like yours.)

Good luck

Do you have any add-ons for IE like the google toolbar? Any other third
party toolbars or tweaks?

No tweaks, no toolbars. I have FreshDownload installed, which puts a 'download with FD' entry in the right-click menu of IE and Netscape

I guess the only way to get rid of the reminder is to allow autocomplete, or switch to Mozilla.

Have you tried enabling all autocomplete functions for a short time,
restarting, then turning off all autocomplete functions?

Hi Don
thanx for all the suggestions
tried it, but the reminder still pops up

Goodbye Internet Explorer, welcome Mozilla FireFox.
