I just ordered a computer for my 8 year old, for school projects and learning
games. I will have it on a home network with high speed and I would like to
make it safe as possible for surfing kids stuff. Is there some place I can
look to tell me how to set up a kids computer for safe surfing. It will have
xp home installed.

The first link below from Microsoft would be a good start at things to look
at. You may also want to purchase very reasonably priced third party
software such as Net Nanny or Cyber Sitter to help manage what content he
can see. Both I believe let you download and try them for free. I would also
make sure that it has Service Pack 2 installed for XP, the built in popup
blocker is enabled, that his user account is not in the local administrators
group, and that you give the built in administrator account a hard to guess
password that you write down somewhere and put in a couple safe places as it
is easy to forget. --- Steve

Hi, Does anyone know of a way to "lock down" a kids computer so that
they are limited to only certain programs and cannot do damage to
anything important? I am not a technical person, so I'm willing to
purchase a product if it makes things easier.

Thanks,

For some requirements, you may find it easier to invest in a
3rd-party solution, such as NetNanny or CyberPatrol.

You need to be aware, however, that *NO* technical or software
solution is fool-proof, and _none_ can ever adequately take the place of
live adult supervision. If you cannot trust your children to
safely/properly use the computer without supervision, you may have to
consider limiting their access to it.
