Keyboard sensitivity

A friend of mine is having a problem with her HP laptop with windows XP SP2.
Below is a message I received from her.

-- Wayne,
Is there any reason why my keys on the computer have to be hit harder. I'm
a fast typist, so not all the letters are showing up....in other words the
sensitivity is not the same. Also, the cursor jumps round more than before.
I barely touch it ...... it jumps! Just the opposite of the letter keys.

Has anyone ever had this happen before, or possibly know what the problem
could be? I personally do not know of any sensitivity adjustment on the
keyboard.

First and foremost she should try using another keyboard to ensure the old
keyboard is not faulty. Once this has been done and if the new keyboard works
as expected then the old one should be thrown away to save any further aggro!

There is no step by step approach to diagnose a hardware problem.

Hope this helps.

ANONYMOUS, this is a laptop computer, not a desktop. Sorry.

No need to be sorry, laptop keyboards fail too. Borrow and attach a USB
keyboard and see if the performance changes. If the cursor is stabler,
consider contacting a service center for that laptop brand with respect to a
replacement keyboard.

I want to thank you all, ANONYMOUS, Gord Debben & Patrick Keenan very much
for the good information you have provided. I will tell my friend what you
all have suggested, and hopefully she will be able to get her problem fixed.

See if the same problem also occurs in windows safe mode.Try performing
system restore to nearest good working point.

Thanks windmap. Some one else suggested that she use system restore also.
However, she said she tried that once, and it screwed up her virus program so
she does not want to do it anymore. She is in Fl. and I am in Pa. so I am
unable to physically help her with her problem. The folks in this forum have
been great and have provided me with a lot of good information. I am sure
with the information I have received here, I could solve her problem if I had
access to her computer. I am passing on the information that I have been
given to her hoping that she can use it to solve her own problem. Thanks
again.

I wanted to let you all know that my friend e-mailed me and said that her
keyboard is working fine now. She thinks it was due to a loose power
connector. The reason she believes this to be true is she advised that she
turned on her computer, and then it and then it went off again. When she
checked she found where the power cord plugged in to the computer was barely
making contact. She plugged it in securely and from then on the computer has
been fine. I guess it is the small things like this that stumps most of us. I
do appreciate the help given.
