Keyboard Remapped - HELP!

I connected to a friend's PC using Remote Assistance while they were on a
corporate VPN. I had control of their keyboard and mouse and then
relinquished to them. As soon as they tried to type, it was immediately
apparent that their keyboard got remapped since alternate characters
appeared for each keystroke. For example, when pressing " m" you get an "
i". What could have caused this and how can it be fixed? They rebooted
their machine several times but it failed to reset back to normal.

check Regional & Language in Control Panel and make sure its correct.
There's a ton of different keyboard configs based on country/language.
