Keyboard not seen after initializing setup

I'm doing a clean install of XP Home on a Compaq 5000US
(about a 2 year old system). It recognizes the keyboard
fine while initializing the setup (I can go into the BIOS
and work fine from a command line), but the setup errors
out after loading drivers, saying that there is no
keyboard connected and setup will halt. I've tried 3
different (PS2) keyboards on the unit to no effect. Anyone
have any ideas on this one?

Check for a BIOS update for the machine first and make sure that its up to
date. Where in the setup process does it fail after the POST happens?
Directly after or do you see Windows loading?
