Keyboard not fully responding - cannot log onto machine

Logitech wireless keyboard suddenly stopped working well - some keystrokes
generate nothing while others cause characters to come out in doubles or
triples. Switched out to cabled keyboard and had same problem, although
different keys had different results in terms of no or duplicate character
rendering.

Since I cannot type in my password, I cannot log in as Owner to try any
troubleshooting. Used F8 to get into Safe mode, and entered as
Administrator. I have access to Device Manager. Attempted to update
Keyboard driver but get message returned "could not find a better match blah
blah". Got same results when attempting with Logitech or wired keyboard.
Device details in control panel say "device is working properly" although it
does not change the new keyboard name (manufacturer) when using the wired one.

On XP SP 2.

(One new thing that has also just started is when turning PC on now get a
dos-feel splash spage that presents info on "Phoenix- AwardBIOS v6., etc."
and forces me to select F1 to continue with startup or DEL to enter SETUP.)

And no, I dont have a restore version. Am I hosed?

Thanks for any help you can provide

This is a hardware issue, not software (Windows). It sounds like you
need to replace your motherboard battery. This is an easy and
inexpensive fix. After you replace the battery, go into the BIOS setup
and enable "legacy usb".

If replacing the battery does not solve your issue, then there is
probably something wrong with the motherboard itself. Let's hope not.
