keyboard & mouse lockup

I have a dell dimension 4550 with Win XP SP2 that recently developed this
problem. After playing or writing to a disk in either of my dvd or cd drives
then ejecting the disk, my keyboard & mouse with not function. It appears
that the system locks-up. The only way I can get the system to work again is
to disconnect the power cable and then restore power and boot up. After I
reboot, everything works fine until I use one of the drives again. And then I
have the same problem. I don't know where to start troubleshooting this
problem -- thanks for any help

If you have ever used Windows Update to install updated hardware drivers
then this could be the cause.
Even if this is not the cause it would not hurt to download and install the
latest drivers for PC's motherboard from the manufacture's web site.

Also uninstall and reinstall the drivers for your CD and DVD drives.

I used Win control panel device mgr to uninstall both my cd & dvd drives and
then rebooted and had Win do a new install. My keyboard & mouse now work
after an eject but several of the software programs such as the win explorer
will not load until I do a reboot. I'm still at a lost. Any other thoughts?
Thanks

Check the Event logs to see if there any entries with a date and time stamp
that matches to when the problem occurs and if it mentions anything about an
error.

I did check the event log and I found under the system events an error
message at the time stamp I ejected a disk and tried to access my explorer (I
did notice that some of my applications would load and seem to work but the
majority of program would not load) The error message within system and under
"source" was "parvdm." Might that be my problem? And if so, what can I do?
Thanks for your help.

I have been trying different things today to see if I could narrow down my
problem. I did find that as long as I didn't eject a disk from either of of
dvd or cd drives I could go to any program and work. But as soon as I either
use the eject button or eject the disk via menu on win explorer, my system
locks up. My last check of event errors after a lock up did show this error
message within the time I had a system lock up. The message is: "Content
index on c:\system volume info.\catalog.wci could not be initialized. error
3221225477. I don't know if this is identifying my problem or where to find
info. on this type of error. Any help would be much apprectiated. Thanks

Stop the "Indexing service"
(Start/Run and enter: services.msc )
Scroll down to the "Indexing service"
Left click on the service, then right click and select "Stop"
Right click again but this time select the 'Properties' Option.
Set the 'Startup type' to: Manual

I did stop the "indexing service" -- but am still experiencing the same
difficulty. I checked the event log and didn't find and further error
messages for the time period. I guess I'll keep trying things (not sure what
right now) to see if I can find anything. But I'm just about at the end of my
knowledge rope! Thanks for all your help.
