Keyboard & mouse freezing

Help. Don't know a lot about computers but hoping this might be an easy one
to fix. My computer keeps randomly freezing, as in keyboard & mouse lock up
no response, only option is to restart via reset button. Occasional problems
on start up but usually ok. Happes with any program open, Word, Excel,
Explorer, online or off. Only issues I know of are that my main fan (the one
connected to the mains unit, is intermittently noisy and may not be
functioning 100% - could overheating here cause lockup? Also, my anti-virus
software identified Netsky-B worm couple of weeks before I think this started
happening - could I have deleted something that's improtant to the running of
the computer. Have found Event Viewer and have one recurring error message
'Service Control Manager.....7000' though this has been appearing since well
before problem started.

Tried downloading SP2 in case it would help - took about 12 attempts due to
lockups - now successfully installed but has no effect. Problem still occurs
& now computer doesn't retain my left-hand mouse settings on shutdown, always
reverts to right-hand when I switch on again!!

Any ideas?

You could do a repair install of xp.
