Keyboard malfunctioning - Pressing one key and getting two letters

When typing I get extra letters from a single keystroke. For example when I
type the letter J , I get the letters JK. When I type the letter K, I get the
letters KJ. When I type the letter U, it will link with the I to give me UI
or IU.

Not all letters are linked. This problem mades it difficult to type passwords.

Rebooting does not correct the problem. Can someone tell me what is
happening to my laptop.

Since those are all keys that border each other, the first simple thing to try is cleaning any crumbs/crud out of the keyboard. With the laptop off, just turn it over with the top open, shake gently, tilt, shake, etc., and tap gently on the bottom. OK, I said gently twice, don't get carried away. You might be surprised at what falls out. If that doesn't work, it may require the keytops to be removed and the underlying mechanical parts examined. It's not terribly difficult, but there can be several small parts for each key, and if you are at all uncomfortable with the idea of doing this then you should contact a reputable computer tech.

I tried gently shaking, blowing and tapping. I even took a piece of paper and
slid the edge under the keys. There was nothing under the keys.

The keys that are affected are on the right side of the keyboard. Here are
the keys(lower case)... 6=, 78,]y, ui, jk,m, and when you type the letter l ,
it appears upside down L. I did another test with the shift key. If I hold
it down, the keys that are affected are... Y}, JK, M<,&*,^+,&*. The L key
type correctly while holding the shift key.

I am thinking about unistalling the keyboard and the reinstalling. I have
not done this before. I know how to uninstall it by going to "Control Panel,
System, Device Manager" and then selecting "Keyboard". What I don't know is
what will happen when I reinstall. Do I need any of the install CD's for XP?
