I don't mind your asking at all, but I'm sorry to say that my answer won't
be helpful to you. My degree is not even remotely close to being in the
computer field. It's in art, a field I never worked in.

When I went to college, there were no colleges that offered computer
degrees. Besides, I had barely heard of computers in those days. I'm mostly
self-taught. I started as a computer professional in 1962, as a programmer
on an IBM 1401, and although I'm retired now, I've had many different
responsibilitities in the field--mostly with mainframes, but more recently
with personal computers.

Thank you very much.

Thank you again. I've always enjoyed writing, and over the years I've done a
fair amount of professional and semi-professional writing.

Your kind words are very much appreciated.

It doesn't offend me at all, and, as always, I'm glad to help when I can.
I've personally learned a lot in newsgroups like this one, and it's
rewarding to be able to give what I can back to the community.

As far as your own studies go, are you working in the field now? If so, in
what capacity? If not, are you looking to become a computer professional, or
do you just want the education for your own use.

Provide more information about your ambitions and plans, and I, and perhaps
others, can perhaps provide advice.

Hi ...

Well i must say you do know your stuff with computer .. I
myself am just an novice user that would like to become
computer professional .... I'm the type of person that
like to solve problems whether it would be hardware or
software or what ever in general, it wouldn't matter just
as long i can keep my mind thinking . I guess what i am
saying is something that would require problems
solving ...

Thank you for replying back ...

The term "computer professional" is extremely broad. There are so many
different kinds of jobs, and they differ so greatly from each other, that
how should proceed depends on your setting more precise goals.

I understand the difficulty in norrowing your aim for a computer career.
Part of it is that, since you're a novice, you don't know enough about the
different choices to make an intelligent choice.

If I were in your shoes, I would not try to specialize yet. Continue to
learn as much as you can and as broadly as you can. Hanging out in technical
newsgroups like this one is an execellent way to acquire knowledge. As you
learn more about computers, you will also learn more about yourself--the
computer areas you like best and that you're best at.
