Kelly's fix for "Play all" in Common Tasks (Music Tasks) in folders

J

JJ

i noticed a previous 3 yr old thread relating to the same problem but
it didnt allow me to add to the thread which presumably is closed now

http://groups.google.co.uk/group/mi...ee5bbb5da1/ae3fed05638b340e#ae3fed05638b340e#

i have exactly the same problem as Ratan had, in that the play all
function does not work. I have tried everything set out here in the
above hyperlinked thread, culminating in applying the 2 fixes from
lines 2 & 327 in Kelly's fixes table. This has restored the play
function but now when i click the play all, it rapidly goes through
all the files in the folder from start to end, i can see it scrolling
thru the track numbers, and titles in WMP, before finally settling to
play just the last track in the folder. Does anyone have any ideas as
to what could be causing this and how i get it working again so that
when i click play all, it plays all the files in sequence and not just
the last file in the folder?
I have pm'd Kelly as well so not sure whether this is overkill
creating a thread..but just in case anyone else is able to help in the
meantime...

Kind regards

JJ

I suggest you post to one or both of the windows media player newsgroups.

Hi Ramesh
Thanks for your input
yes i have done those 2 suggested fixes..that link you posted was also
posted in the original thread created by Ratan. I've done them both ,
neither rectified the current problem...the Kelly fixes however seemed
to give more success ie the play all button now works but
frustratingly, only plays the last file in the folder ..and this is
where we are now...any more ideas?

Not as far as i'm aware..i have Media Player Classic on my computer
too..could that be the "wmplayer(2).exe"? and wont removing that entry
stop that app working?

Ramesh, MS-MVP

and wont removing that entry stop that app working?

Nope, it doesn't. And the classic Media Player is mplayer2.exe, not mplayer(2).exe.

Okay Ramesh i deleted that registry application value, and now the
play all function has totally stopped working.ie it doesnt even play
the last file in the folder anymore. Also when i doubleclick a single
file, it asks me what program i want to open the file with. If i
browse and select wmp.exe not the wmp(2).exe it plays it, but then
when i try and double click another mp3 file in the same folder, it
asks me again what program i want to use, despite me checking the
'Always use this program to open this kind of file' box?
So three problems,
1) i cant double-click to play a mp3 file
2) the file assocation is such that WMP asks me every time i double-
click an mp3 file, what program to open it with
and it does not remember which program to use, after i check the
'Always use this program to open this kind of file', for further mp3
files
3) the play all function does not work at all anymore

I have tried applying both those Kelly's registry fixes again which
seemed to give me some degree of success yesterday but they dont
appear to work now....

I desperately need some help in getting my WMP working properly again.
Is there no way to uninstall and clean reinstall WMP?

R

Ramesh, MS-MVP

JJ,

We can re-merge the original registry data if need be. So that's not a problem. But the root cause need to be determined. Create a System Restore point and try this:

Open Control Panel - Add or Remove Programs - Set Program Access and Defaults
Select "Custom", click "Windows Media Player" and click OK.

WMP will be set as the default player (thus the media file associations will be repaired)

Restart Windows and check if the problem is fixed. If not, re-post the file association information for .mp3, and also the export of this registry key:

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\wmplayer.exe]

JJ,

Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\wmplayer.exe
Click File > Export and save the branch to a REG file.
Close Regedit.exe

Open the saved REG file using Notepad and post the contents here.

and tell me precisely what you want to do within that post...sorry but
i dont want to deviate an iota from any advice you give me...im
slightly worried i'll make a mistake that even you wont be able to
help me recover from.hope u understand?

Repost:

Click Start, Run and type Regedit.exe
Navigate to:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Applications\wmplayer.exe
Click File > Export and save the branch to a REG file.
Close Regedit.exe

Open the saved REG file using Notepad and post the contents here.
