<Kelly or Group>
How can I make XP use Name sort as the default way of showing entries in
File Dialog boxes?
Ever since I added a Comment column to some folders, the default sort seems
to be by Comment even for folders that have no Comment column.
I have tried the following Reg Tweaks to no avail:
..
196. SORT ALL BY ALPHABET--START MENU AND FAV'S
019A. CORRECT THE SORT ORDER IN WINDOWS XP
..
I have tried Tools/Folder Options/View but it appears to have nothing
related to sort order.
After I Rt Clicl/Arrange Icons By/Name for A Dialog Box, the next time I
open it, it is back to Comment sort.
..
I am using XP Pro and I have all my drives formatted with Fat32 [so I can
dual boot to W98SE]
I think the Registry must have some way to change the File Dialog Box
default sort order or to remove the Comment column and all attempts to use
it

I hope I understand your problem correctly. If I gave the wrong instruction
because I didn't understand your problem, or if this doesn't work, please
post back to let me know.
1. Open "My Computer"
2. On the "View" menu, under "Arrange Icons By" select
"Name"
3. Then, on the "Tools" menu, click "Folder Options", go to the
"View" tab and click the button that says "Apply to All Folders"
If this works properly, you will need to go to each individual folder
that you want to be displayed as "Comment", but ONLY go as far as step 2
when selecting your new view, otherwise you may end up with the same
problem.

Tony:
Thanks for steering me in the right direction to solve the problem.
My interpretation of how the problem got fixed is:
I had previously done what you suggested but I think I had to remove all of
the Comment columns by applying the procedure to a top level partition such
as C:\ because My Computer had no Comment column.

A detailed longwinded description of how the problem got corrected is below.
I wrote it as I did it.

I am not sure what your last paragraph means.
If 'displayed as "Comment" ' means have a Column labeled Comment in the
details view, I no longer care because I found out I cannot add any comments
to those columns because all my partitions are formatted with Fat32.
Also do you mean that in order to have File Dialog boxes use Name as the
default icon arrangement I will have to find every folder that has a
Comments column and select arrange icons by name in it?
..
Independent of the last paragraph meaning,
Trying to follow your procedure here is what happened.
In My Computer on the View menu Arrange Icons By already showed Name as
checked.
I then did your step 3.
..
I then opened a program called Hunter and selected Open Verify Collection
View.
The resulting dialog box was not organized by Name.
I right clicked it and selected ...by Name.
They became org by name.
I selected a collection and had it open the view. I closed Hunter.
I reopened Hunter and selected Open Verify Collection View.
Still not arranged by name.
..
Note: D\Programs\Hunter is the folder that contains the files that the above
Dialog box shows.
I did the following steps to make sure that driven down to that fooder was
arranged by name to see if the Dialog box would then be arranged by name. As
described below it did not help.
..
I opened drive D--not arranged by Name. I removed the Comment column from it
I set it to arrange by Name.
Closed it.
Reopened it--now it was arranged by name.
Opened D:\Programs --not arranged by name.
I removed the Comment column from it It auto became arranged by name.
Opened D\Programs\Hunter--not arranged by name
I removed the Comment column from it It auto became arranged by name.
closed all three.
I opened D, then Programs then Hunter they were all organized br name
..I reopened Hunter and selected Open Verify Collection View.
Still not arranged by name.
..
I opened C:\ [not the boot drive for XP]
I removed the Comments column.
I set the Arrange to Name
I opened Tools/Folder Options/View
Apply to all folders
Apply
OK

This seems to have corrected the problem. After I started up the computer
the default Icon arrangement seems to be Name in all folders on a sample of
my partitions [I have 21 partitions on 11 hard drives with 1780 GB nom] and
in the Dialog boxes.
