Hi everybody

Using XP Home.

I am having a problem with some of the icons in my notification area
"disappearing" after a while even though they are marked to "Always show" in
their behavior listing. This disappearing only happens after the PC has
been running for a while. The only way I can get them to reappear is to
reboot the PC.

I've been to Kelly's corner at http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
and among the tweaks on that page are a number for the notification area,
but it is not clear which one is the one for my problem because there is no
clear descriptions for the registry edits.

Any suggestions as to what causes the notification icon problem how to solve
this problem?

I see you still don't have an answer. Neither do I. Kelly even sent
you a link to the very page you complained about, without an explanation.

Note: Some original posts are not attached in/with/along replies, I really
don't remember each and every post I read (that vary between 12 and 24 hours
apart): issues, facts and problems and suggest what I think may help, I
don't have the answer for everything related to XP (but do give an honest
effort to troubleshoot it)....

That said, what was/is the issue in detail other than the fact that they
disappear? Which specific programs, when does this happen, after doing what
and for how long, after doing nothing, but only when you think to notice,
when you look that way, when you go to exit the program(s) in
question.........?

Oh come on Kelly: you DO know everything there is to know about XP!! <grin>

What happens is that after the laptop has been running for long times, some
program (it varies) causes the desktop to "restart itself". By this, I do
not mean that the laptop shuts down, but that the desktop icons all
disappear and then reappear (crash?). When that happens, SOME of the icons
in the notification area do not reappear and will not reappear unless I
reboot.

David, made a brilliant point and it does come into play here. Still not
knowing exactly which programs they are, one primary candidate has been
Seti.

And thanks for the smile, Jeff. Would be nice, if true! :o)

I have seen this from explorer.exe restarting. What you need to find out is
why it is doing so. And also, this is the action set forth from removing
Past Icons with programs that aren't written properly to maintain from there
on. Meaning that they need to be restarted, etc.

Try in order:

1. Run the edit on line 157: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Then wait for the next time.
2. If no go, run the edit on line 62 (right hand side):
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm
Then wait for the next time.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Thank you.

I will keep my eyes open. As I recall it, it is while using Explorer that
this happens. One of the icons that does not re-appear in the notification
area is one of XP's own: the icon that tells you whether you are connected
to the internet (dial-up) and which on right clicking on it allows you to
disconnect. That is the icon I miss most when this happens because then the
only way I can disconnect is by clicking on the appropriate icon to go
offline in Outlook Express 6.

Most welcome, Jeff and I see. See if any of this applies in your case:

Icons are missing or disappear, reappear: This happens for most Auto-Logon
users.

Methods/workarounds: Log off and Log back on, password protect your account
or disable SSDP and uPNP Services.

Disable SSDP and uPNP Services (Line 156)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Or if you are running XP SP1 uninstall UPnP from Add/Remove Windows
Components.

Hide or Show Inactive Icons in the Notification Area (Line 53)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Remove Past Items From the Notification Area (Line 53)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Once done, Open Task Manager, click the Processes tab, click Explorer.exe,
and then click End Process. In Task Manager, click File, click New Task,
type explorer, and then click OK.

The "Past Items" values are written to the registry as part of the user log
off process. This is why it is necessary to "crash" Explorer, so the system
will re-read the new values, and not retain the old ones that are already in
memory from a reboot.

If not, good luck and keep us posted. :o)

Dear Kelly

Sorry for taking up so much of your time. I cannot believe you are making
all this effort to help a total stranger. Thank you.
You are absolutely correct. The problem only happens when the desktop
"crashes" and restores itself, and I do use Auto-Logon.

I had disabled UPNP long ago (using Gibsons unpnp.exe utility) and now I
went ahead and disabled SSDP through Services.

Because I do have XP Home SP1, I went to Add Remove Programs\Windows
Components\Networking Services to uninstall Universal Plug and Play and
found that I had already done that.

Before going to the 2 patches you list, I tried the "acid test" by crashing
the desktop as you described and restarted it. That re-created the exactly
the problem I was having: some of the notification icons did not come back!

I therefore rebooted (to get back to scratch) and downloaded the 2 patches
you suggest. Before I run them I would like to ask a couple of questions:
1. What exactly do these patches do? Scary to run them without knowing that.
<grin>
2. Will the problem disappear if I did not use auto-logon?
3. I know what :-) means. What does :o) mean?

Kelly

You are a genius. Following my previous reply, my impatience took hold of
me and I ran the 2 scripts you suggested. I then repeated the acid test
(crashing explorer) and by golly, this time more icons came back. Two that
did not are:

1. the icon for Paul Beuger's "TypeItIn" even though task Manager shows it
to be still running. I have to use the task Manager to close it and restart
it after which it appears.

2. the icon for Dale Nurden's TClockEx - which as it turns out is no longer
running and needs to be restarted manually.

Thank you very much!

You are most welcome, Jeff and no problem, I enjoy helping, when I can. :o)

As for the rest of your great feedback/reply:

1. The first one, resets the registry, the second one removes past icons,
which has helped others.

2. Try setting a password and test (crashing explorer.exe). If it doesn't
help, revert.

3. :o) just simply means a nice, friendly smile!

Good luck, Jeff.

Seems, I spoke too soon and thanks Jeff. :o)

I would contact both 1 and 2 and let them know what issues you are having in
XP. BTW, how old are these programs and which operating systems were they
written for?

Keep me posted, Jeff.

They're old programs, I b believe written for W95/98. Maybe I should try
them under W 95 compatibility settings.
