keeping emails in my inbox in Outlook 2003

At work I like to keep important messages in my inbox for many months at a
time. However, after about a month they keep showing up in Deleted Items. A
colleague says it might be to do with AutoArchive or email retention
settings. I don't want this to happen.

How can I configure Outlook to not delete these messages?

If you are using Exchange Server then it's your Exchange Admin who sets
those limits.
If you are NOT using Exchange server, why not move them to another folder
instead of keeping them all in the Inbox?

Thank you for prompt reply Gordon.

Have asked about adminstrator; apparently settings are entirely up to us

I know I could move messages to different folder, but experience has taught
me that unless a message is right there when I open Outlook, I forget its
existence! Yeah, I know, I'm a slob!

There must be a setting to change to keep my emails in my Inbox.

Three things I can think of: Do you have a Rule set up to delete after a
certain time span? Is Autoarchive set on the Inbox? (Right-click on the
Inbox, choose Properties and click on the Autoarchive tab), or have you set
your messages to expire? (Tools-Options, on the General tab click on Email
Options-Advanced Email options, and the expiry setting is down at the
bottom).

HTH

Yes, AutoArchive is set to run. There are a number of options available, but
the one that makes me think this is the culprit is 'Clean out items older
than 30 days'.

However, under that option it has the button checked next to 'Move old items
to .....\Microsoft\Outlook\archive.pst'. Is this where it is moving old
emails to my Deleted Items folder, or is archive.pst somewhere else? There is
an archive folders option in the left hand pane, it does have old emails in
it now I come to look in it.

thanks for your time

Are you using an Exchange server? Is Autoarchive enabled?

No I am not using Exchange Server.

Yes AutoArchive is enabled. Does AutoArchive delete files, or just archive
them?

Thanks for all the help in solving this.

Depends on how you have it configured. It can do either.

Permanently delete old items is selected in AutoArchive options - I guess
this is causing my problem.

To fix it I have right clicked on Inbox folder > properties >AutoArchive and
selected 'Do not archive items in this folder'.

Will this keep items in my inbox so I can continue being a disorganised slob!?

Thank you for everyone's help. I feel I have learnt so much about
AutoArchive I may actually use it from now on.

You bet. Disabling autoarchive on the folder will elimiate deletions dues to
autoarchive. You can also use Tools>Options>Other>AutoArchive and disable it
for all folders.
