Keepers of the Month

F

Frank Bohan

Each month I install a dozen or so new freeware programs. Some are discarded
either because they do not do what I want, or I do not like the EULA, or
occasionally because I cannot make them work properly. These are my
"keepers" for May:

Folder Access -- enables folders to be locked using a password.
http://www.lockfolder.net/

Handy Recovery -- Recover deleted files. Easy to use.
http://www.handyrecovery.com.

Startup Inspector for Windows -- Tells you what loads at startup:
http://www.windowsstartup.com/

Scanner -- Produces an attractive pie chart for each drive. Mouseover
reveals details.
http://www.steffengerlach.de/freeware/
(also from this site -- XO -- A deceptively simple game)

SaverWiz -- Make your own screen saver.
http://www.rjhsoftware.com/products.html
(several other good programs to be found at this site, including RJH
Extensions)

Thanks to all who recommended the above programs.
What are your recent "keepers"?.

These are keepers I've found this month that some might like to try -

UK's Kalendar - great reminder/to-do/calendar program, with plenty of
options that are unfortunately hard to find if you don't read the help
file. Make sure you don't throw it away before fully testing it!
http://www.8ung.at/ukrebs

StartMan - startup manager. I've tried a few, but fell in love with this
one first time. Its default view is the actual order in which your progs
start. Plus -
"Duplicate Detection and Removal, a unique feature of StartMan, can be
configured to remove all duplicates automatically, with or without
prompting.
Orphan Detection and Removal. As above, for orphaned startups.
Executable Detection and Removal. As above, for executables.
Includes a full range of sorting options to make it easier to locate a
specific startup - by name, by filename - even by command line
parameter!" - http://www.pt.lu/comnet/desc/startman.html

DiskTest Pro - if you really want to recover data from a damaged floppy
disk, this is the program you need. Where Unstoppable Copier fails, this
prog may succeed at least partially. Looks strange at first, but once
you get used to it it's almost as hypnotising as defragging :) -

I also notice that the Pricelessware page has listed v.2.7 of
Superformat, but I've found v.2.8. I was wary because I thought that it
might have been like TurboNavigator 1.47, I.e. a later version gone
horribly wrong, but I've tried it and it seems ok. Perhaps someone else
knows more....? Anyway, it can be found here -
http://www.oldstuff.myagora.net/Lightspeed/main.html - along with a heap
of DOS and Win3.1 stuff for the nostalgia buffs or, dare I say, those who
still actually use them....?!

Hmmmm, now that I think about it, I've still got that old Cyrix 586/133
m/b and some other old parts....

But there isn't anything wrong with Turbo Navigator 1.47.
I use it everyday. it's a very good file manager. Much better than
Windows Explorer.
There were some questions about spyeware but they were pure nonsense.

I agree it was nice, and no Spyware. No thumbnails was the deal killer for
me.

Looks nice but install adds 1354 reg keys and 33 files. Plus misc
counters into .dll's & .ocx's. A bit much.

(Of course some of it might only be the installer but even so!)

What did you use to moniter the install and get that info? Also, did you
uninstall and what did you use to get rid of the changes?

And thanks for the info. I was going to try it but sticking with startup
cop.

I had a big problem with Turbo Navigator 1.47; as far as I can recall
now, I believe it was with illegal operation messages all the time. I
assumed that was why v.1.46 made the 2003 Pricelessware list rather than
v.1.47.

Hang on! I think I've found the problem. I was looking at
http://www.pricelessware.org/2003/PL2003FILEUTILITIES.htm#FileManager.
But when I just checked google to find out more about v1.47, it led me to
http://www.pricelessware.org/PL2003FILEUTILITIES.htm#FileManager. (It
would seem there are 2 separate 2003 Pricelessware lists?!!!) Anyway,
the second page has this info - "Download v 1.47 WinNT4/2000/XP". I'm
running Win98, so there's the problem. Unfortunately this info seems to
be lacking at other download sites, eg.
http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/page6.html

So, my humble apologies to Turbo Navigator. I would add though that I
still use and love v.1.46, despite the dramas I had with the later
version.

"they called him //ullins, he was a mad newfrouper"
looks good, but freeware version can only lock 4 folders.

You can get around this limitation by nesting extra folders into the locked
folders.

I installed it using Total Uninstall 2.34
<http://www.geocities.com/ggmartau/tu.html> and was surprised to see the
number of changes made.

I played around with it a bit but didn't see any advantages of it over -

Startup Control Panel from Mike Lin
autoruns from sysinternals
the startup page in the tools pane in Spybot S&D
or a number of others that I have hanging around

So I uninstalled it using Total Uninstall and saved the log out of
curiosity. The above is the count of "Deleting Registry Key" and
"Deleting File" entries, omitting "Fails", in the file.

I most often just go to Mike Lin's program to edit startup activity.

I couldn't see a 1meg file to install a 50k exe. In the future,
anything installed with msi will be ignored. I suspect most of
the reg changes were related to the installer. Since I canceled
the install I only registered this in IC5:

c:\WINDOWS\TEMP\startman10385.msi
Date: 7/1/2002 6:46 PM
Size: 1,884,160 bytes
Thanks,

Didn't know there was a v 2.8 - it seems that very few people do. . .

Download link (perhaps the only one?):

http://www.ifrance.com/archerdelaur/sformat.zip

34 KB (exe is 36913 bytes, date is 2001-01-07)

Would some of the experts check this out please and recommend on whether
or not we should change the Pricelessware version.
