Keep getting numbered new documents

Every time I open a new word document, the document is numbered at the top,
(ex. new doc1, new doc2, etc.). Even if I don't write any text, immediately
close or save any changes it still adds the next consecutive number. I am
currently up to document 12 and I haven't written anything in word in a few
days. I can open then close Word right away without writing anything and the
numbers still increase.

Sounds like temp files are not getting deleted. See
http://www.gmayor.com/what_to_do_when_word_crashes.htm. If you're on a
network, it may be that you don't have the required delete permission on the
folder where the temp files are stored.

I have tried what the link said and still have the problem. I am now up to document 15.

With Word and Outlook closed, delete the temporary files as indicated.
Reboot the PC and see if that has fixed it.
