KB951748 Security Update Kills Network Connection

T

Tom Hall

As soon as I installed this update that was released today, I was unable to
acquire a network connection. A quick check with my ISP confirmed that the
problem was not on their end. My modem was showing an IP, and my system had
successfully acquired an IP from the router - but I still had no internet
connectivity.

As soon as I uninstalled KB951748, the problem went away.

Microsoft strikes again...

Got Zone Alarm installed on your computer? Take a look at these threads in the
Zone Alarm forums.

While I agree that MS is at least partially fault, the story might be one of
a more complex internaction among programs.

See posting in this newsgroup at 2:29 PM by Ron Hardin, plus responses.

I had similar behavior, in which internet failed if Zone Alarm was on, but
actually worked with it off. (Of course, before the XP update internet
worked with ZA on.)

I agree that removing the update via add/remove programs fixes the problem.

Like Tom Hall, I had instant connection failures immediately after
today's updates. Unlike him, I was running ZoneAlarm. When I turned
off ZoneAlarm, I still could not connect to anything. System Restore
(to the point created just before the update was installed) made
connection possible again.

All I had to do was to uninstall the security update and then block it. Now
Windows Update tells me I have hidden critical updates, but I'd rather live
without KB951748 than without my internet connection.

You should consider reviewing your system for installed components that
might be similar to the Zone Alarm functions.

That's fine if you're running ZoneAlarm. What about a fix for people (such
as myself) who AREN'T using ZoneAlarm?

Tom

Don't know what you have unique in your PC, but I just updated 5 machines,
none with ZA, and have no problems with Internet connections.
But with an estimated 1,000,000 various configurations, it is always
possible to have a conflict.

PS 98.8% of all statistics are made up!

I had the same problem, no connection with the patch installed. Uninstall it
and connection comes back.

Whist it was installed I disable the Virus checker and Firewall (Bullguard)
but this was not the problem, I still had no connection to the internet.
Whist it was installed I could communicate with the router admin page but
could not connect to the Internet, until the KB951748 was removed.

It appears that KB951748 took out most if not all third-party firewalls.
Strangely, it didn't mess up Windows Firewall... :)

Apparently the update did some shuffling of port ranges.

I have filled out a MS Help & Support, even though I told them I had
Bullguard installed and I had disabled it, they sent me a message about
ZoneAlarm and closed the call! Unbelievable!

It could be related to Bullguard but, after I disabled it the Windows
Firewall took over and it still didn't work, until I disabled KB951748.

Best leave that one out then.

I just got this machine last month. I had ZA and Windows firewall
running at the same time and had to disable Windows firewall to fix
the situation. ZA and KB951748 work just fine as long as Windows
firewall is inoperable. ZA and Windows firewall do the same thing,
don't they?

No. Zone Alarm is superior to the Windows Firewall in Win XP.

Zone Alarm prevents unauthorized programs from accessing the Internet
without your knowledge. Windows Firewall merely protects against inward
attacks. Furthermore, it is not recommended to run two different
firewalls at the same time.

Zone Labs have released an update to Zone Alarm, which is compatible
with KB951748.

You shouldn't have ZA & Windows firewall running at the same time. When you
install ZA Windows firewall is usually turned off automatically. There was a
known issue with ZA & a windows update and ZA was updated to function
correctly after the update. So just be sure you have the latest version of
ZA.
