KB925902 How do I force automaitc updates NOT to ever install it?

I don't want this patch, it blue screens my Toshiba Tecra M2. My system uses
sound max not realtek so that is not the problem. Symantec AV will catch it
so I don't need protection.

Toshiba blames Microsoft and Microsoft blames Toshiba. I'm over this
childish finger pointing. The fact that CODE can be run from within an image
file is ridiculous .

So how do I set updates to stop trying to install it? There is no hide
button for this patch.

put WU on notify instead of automatically installing
then you can pick which ones to download and it will not automatically do it
to do this
control panel/automatic updates
put a check next to Nofify me first but do not automatically install them.

Robinb,

That would work fine if I were the one going to use the machine. I would
know to uncheck it over and over and over every Tuesday but a 13 you old
student will be using this machine and I need this machine to autoupdate. I
really don't expect the patch problem to be fixed any time soon if ever.
There must be a file that can be updated to keep the patch from being
installed.

Do you know what driver on your system has the conflict? There's a
command-line uninstall referenced in the article about the security patch,
but depending on something like that seems very much of a kludge.

If the driver isn't crucial to the way you or the student uses the machine,
you'd be better off with the patch in and the driver out.

I'm not as sanguine as you about the protection afforded by antivirus
vendors in this situation. I do see that vendors seem to be spotting the
code which exploits the vulnerability, as well as the packages that follow,
but now that the patch is released there may be more folks working out
exploit code.

However, have you tried http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935448/ that
fixes some of the problems with 935902?

If you decide to try this, be very careful. It had a far more devastating
effect on my machine than the original 925902 patch did. Make sure you set a
Restore Point before you do it, and be ready to boot into safe mode
afterwards (to restore your system), if it goes bad.

Pat,

Thank you and thank you to all who replied. I never saw that if you
un-check the patch on the SECOND page AFTER telling window updates you want
the patch you can then tell it not to install the patch again. Of course tell
it then change your mind thats so obvious! @#$#@$#$#@!!!!!!!

Thank you again!

Wellllllllll after looking at this more. I can not unselect a CRITICAL patch
this way only a noncritical. So yet again Microsoft is controlling the system
not me.

Any one, Any one?? Bueller? Bueller?

The answer has been posted, I believe--set automatic updates to "Notify me
but don't automatically download or install them."

We could step back a bit --you are sure that the conflict isn't your sound
card, but do you know what it is? Have you tried a triage technique with
MSCONFIG--just disable the drivers from Toshiba? I know that it may well be
unlikely that Toshiba will fix this soon, but I'd bet that either they will,
or Microsoft will provide code to prevent the conflict. No vendor wants
their customers to be required to run in a demonstrably unsecure state.
