KB835732 causes stack fault when running MS-DOS program!

These new updates have caused no end of trouble. First, when updating
the complete set of 5 yesterday KB835732 hung before it was finished.
I left it overnight, but it did not finish. I then rebooted, removed all the
updates and loaded them one at a time. That took the whole morning.

Now - when I try to run a MS-DOS program that I use alot I get the
following message:
C:\Parmela1>parmela c:\parmela1\par_in.txt
Abnormal program termination: Stack fault
CS:EIP = 000Fh:00001373h

By uninstalling KB837001 & KB835732 I got it to run again. When
I reinstalled KB835732 it failed again. I cannot currently get KB837001
to reinstall, I will try again.

Do I sound frustrated?

Can anyone suggest something to do to get my win2k pro system to
work with all the security measures enabled?

Thanks...

Note - this same problem occurs on another installation of win2k pro on
different hardware... That installation was updated without any problems.

I have also had problems with KB835732. On one machine it broke the sound
(Sound Max on a ASUS P4P800 board) causing it to load slowly and diverting
some of the system event sounds (such as "chord") from the sound system to
the system speaker as a beep. On another, it broke the ability to bring up
the list of partitions under the save as dialog. In both cases, I restored
images made before the updates, applied each "fix" until they broke again.
KB835732 was the culprit. It is not now applied to either of the effected
machines. I have one more Win 2000 and one Win ME unit to update. I'll
probably not apply it to them.

I guess we are in a bind then, since some geek has already released an exploit
to take advantage of unpatched systems. Go to this website and then follow the
link to the wierdo's posting.

My systems are presently behind firewalls - but one is a laptop and I plan to
take it on the road at the end of the week. I don't suppose I should count on
the hotel high speed access to have a firewall - right?

I have spent a total of 1 1/2 hours with microsoft on hold waiting to talk to someone,
no progress yet. You might think I could be of use, since I can email my simple
little ms-dos program to them. Maybe I will try waiting for another hour on hold
on monday.

I too am experiencing the sound problem after installing KB835732
(along with KB828741, KB837001, KB831167, and KB837009) yesterday on
my Win2k box. I haven't tried uninstalling KB835732 but judging by
all the vulnerabilities it's supposed to fix, it seems risky to
uninstall it. I'm pretty sure that these horrible worm/virus writers
will very likely take advantage of one of them within the next year.

I'm getting the PC speaker beep instead of the correct system event
sound that you describe. I'm running an old Asus A7V mobo w/1 ghz
T-Bird and an SB Live. I tried updating to the latest drivers I could
find on Creative's site (dated Feb 28 03!) instead of using what I
believe what were the drivers that Win2k came with. It didn't help.

Check out this site...

It seems an internet security firm has already published an exploit
that uses it. These virus writers are no longer high school kids
out for thrills, but multi-million dollar corporations out to turn your
computer into a spam bot or porn website. Expect the virus in a
few weeks.

I, too tried to reinstall the sound drivers. No fix. To think, I paid good
money for this abuse.

You will need to wait on the phone 2 hours yourself to report the sound issue.
But judging on the wide variety of other complaints I suspect that microsoft is
already working on it. I have not seen an official proclamation about this though.

My problem was clean enough to email - so I did. I doubt that you want to
ship your entire PC off to microsoft.
