KB 891711.exe in STARTUP

Don

Is MS update KB891711 supposed to be in my STARTUP as KB891711.EXE as a
checked item. Been having a problem lately like screen going to black
during startup with Windows not loading and then having to restart in safe
mode. Unchecking this update in the startup window seems to help. Am I
missing something important by not loading it?

Using W98 SE
IE 6.0
Norton AV 2003 with latest updates
Dell Dimension XPSD266 Pentium 2
256 MB memory

Hi Don :)

Just uncheck it in your startup and you should have no problems.

For more information on this, take a look at the information here:

Hope this helps :)

It is not a "patch", a program which alters the system files, then
disappears. It is a "kludge", an application which runs resident to "fix"
whatever problem it fixes. So, yes, it will show up as you see it.

It has caused a slew of problems. I have no idea why. At first it seemed
browser related, then processor related; but enough data is out there to
dismiss both ideas. Current consideration is graphical; but I have my
doubts. I have two computers, identical make and model, identical in the
graphics; one runs fine with it, the other crashes unless it is removed. I
believe the only difference is in the BIOS date.

If you are having problems, the best short term solution is not to uncheck
it from the startup list if your computer will boot with it running. If
necessary try this in Safe Mode. If your system will boot with Kb891711
running, boot it, then kill the process from the "Close Program" list
(Windows 98/ME). Now use the "Add/Remove Programs" in the "Control Panel" to
remove it. If you have Windows Automatic Updates set, the best way is to
just delete the associated "RunService" key from the registry.

Unchecking anything from the 'msconfig' Startup Group list should only be
done temporarily as a troubleshooting measure.
