My Dell X200 notebook, on accessing certain folders with
Windows Explorer which contain large image files has
Explorer crash in a manner like described in KB 824136,
and does anyone have the patch that they could zip up and
send, or point to it somewhere? MS wants me to pay to get
the hotfix. The problem started after installing the
823980 security patch (MS03-026).
Thanks, Janis

Windows XP: Windows 2000:
SYMPTOMS
You may experience any of the following symptoms:
When you right-click a file, Windows Explorer may quit
unexpectedly, or you may receive an "Access Violation"
error message, or you may receive the following error
message:

Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.
When you view the details of the error, you find an error
signature similar to the following: AppName
AppVer ModName ModVer Offset

"Note In special cases, charges that are ordinarily incurred for support
calls may be canceled if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that a
specific update will resolve your problem. The usual support costs will
apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the
specific update in question."

If you qualify for the hotfix, MS won't charge you anything.

Are you running IE6-SP1?

Thank you PA Bear,
Actually I did call tem after posting, hoping I'd qualify,
and they have sent me the hotfix. Now to see if the hotfix
will solve the problem, after a system backup, of course.

Hello PA Bear et al,
After a system backup, and setting a Win XP Pro System
Restore Point, we attempted to apply this patch, and failed!
I will be attempting to contact MS regarding it soon.
Here's what happened to us:
The exe extracts 3 files into a folder you specify, one is
MS reference and legal stuff, but the other two are both exe's.
MS's instruction appear to be totally generic, as they do
not refer to 2 exe's.
I chose to run the larger of the two, as the others name
referred to symbols. Very quickly the program reported an
error: (X) Extraction failed - xpsp1hfm.exe is not a valid
Win32 application [OK]. I then ran the symbols exe, which
extracted some folders and files, and then attempted
another run of the other exe, but got the same error. The
patch did not appear to be applied, and our problem was not
fixed. I restored the system to the previous System Restore
Point.
Anyone have a similar experience?
Thanks,
Janis

Hi PA Bear,
Yes, I believe we're running IE6-sp1 as we are quite up to
date on patches.
Do you know of some impact?
Thanks,
Janis
