Kaspersky - Practical comments

P

Peter

Having used a number of AV programs I have settled down with
Kaspersky. For me it provides an efficient AV service which I
update manually, frequently, with no problems.

For a long time I have used version 3.5.133.0, A32F350.EXE
(9.331Mb). I use this in preference to version 4.5 (14.202Mb) and
the 5.0.121 version 5 that I tried ( KAV5.0.121_PERSONAL_EN.EXE
(8.958Mb). I forget what the user interface of V4.5 is like but I
definitely prefer that of V3.5 to that of V5.

For me one particular attraction of Kaspersky AV is the ease of
updating the database and the fact that all the database and
registration data is stored in:-

C:\Program Files\Common Files\(AVP Shared + Sub Folder)

My PC has three bootable partitions each with kaspersky AV
installed. If I update any one partition I just substitute the
latest (AVP + Sub Folder) for the older one on the other two
bootable partitions.

Because two of my three bootable partitions are hidden at any time,
the transfer has to be done using a non-bootable partition, which is
always visible, as a staging post..

Sorry to have been long-winded! I hope that my comments will be of
use to someone.

Yes. It's available from the Swiss site:

http://www.avp.ch

I also think version 3.5 is the best. The default is "smart" scanning
rather than scanning all files. On a 900 mhz PIII with 128 RAM I can't
tell the avp monitor is active. No slowdown at all.

I used to have 3.5 but after a fatal ex husband error ;) ( the **** trashed
my PC) I downloaded 5.0 and despite all the horror stories it works fine
here: I ran a full system scan and didn't notice any difference in slowdown.
It was slightly more than 3.5 but nothing to write home about and certainly
not what some other users have documented.

Instead of transfering the files, use one common directory for all of
the shared files. Change BasePath and KeysPath in the AVP.INI files.

I thin also the later 4.5 version is fast if you don't install the
control center utility. The updates must be configured manually to
task scheduler but otherwise it is light and efficient.

I am glad that my posting provoked constructive comment!
Particularly, thank you Guy. I must be a bit slow not to have
thought of editing the .INI file.

Since the original posting I have tried the evaluation version of
the DOS version, available on www.avp.ch . Well, it worked but it
takes a long time, just over 2.5 hours to scan my "Working" C:
drive, ( 4.53Gb used of 9.91Gb available). Nevertheless a useful
tool in an emergency.

Does anyone know whether it is practical to copy the upated *.AVC
files etc from a registered Windows version to the DOS version to
update it, and possible identify it as registered. I hope that my
annual sub covers the DOS version as well as the Windows one!

Thank you all,

Peter

Peter, AVPDOS32 from the Swiss site is somewhat crippled and doesn't
find all the malware that later builds will. Google up a copy of
KAVDOS32.RAR and after unraring it, copy KAVDOS32.EXE
build 135 to your working folder and delete AVPDOS32.EXE

Kaspersky no longer supports the DOS version. So just find yourself a
copy of KAVDOS32 build 135 and use it. And yes, you can copy the def
files to your DOS working folder. The defs are the same for the DOS
and Windows versions.

Version 5 seems to work fine for some people.I have a w98se machine p3 733
256 ram and ,it did drastically slow down my machine to the point of
freezing at startup.Possibly a conflict with outpost firewall , as a few
others have had similar experience. After it had loaded it was just sooo slow
even opening a my documents folder ,and that was on recommended
settingAfriend also installed it on her XP machine 1.8ghz , and also
reported a slowdown to the norm.Ive just tired 3.5 and there doest seem to
be a problem with that version on my machine.

To swap AVPDOS Version 3.0 build 133 to build 135 you want these files:

KAVDOS32.EXE
KAVLOCR.DLL
KAVST32.BAT
KAVTUN32.EXE

These are the DEF related files that are used by the DOS versions
(plus the Key of course):

avp.klb
avp.set
avp.vnd
engine.cfg
engine.dt
avcmhk*.dll
*.avc

When I used the "full blown" installations of AVP/KAV 3.6.1.0
(Enterprise Professional or some name similar) on multiboot
workstations I always set them up that way.

OS's on theier own partitions, programs and data on common partitions.
That way it is easy to do a networked image restore.
And the users are always up to date no matter what OS they may be using
at the time of boot.
