KASFX discontinued

Some users reported failures of the KASFX av scanner utility I had up
at my web site. Yesterday, I experienced the same. Apparently, one or
more of the .KEY license files have expired. So that's the end of
that, so far as I'm concerned. I've withdrawn the KASFX d/l from my
web site.

A bit of history and explanation. KASFX was based on a older version
of the free MWAV offering from MicroWorld. That older version had a
clean/delete capability. It uses the Kaspersky scan engine. I added a
updater, and arranged my KASFX util to act as a emergency scanner,
whereby when first run it auto-updated and then invoked the av
scanner.

Later versions of the free MicroWorld offering did not and do not
have the clean/delete capability. MicroWorld charges a monthly fee
for such a version. While I've been willing to stretch ethical limits
by offering the older free version, I want no part of messing with or
transferring license keys. I encourage users to quit using the older
expired version.

Note that there are other free emergency scan approaches using
the Kaspersky engine. Kaspersky offers a free online scan. Dave
Lipman's Muti-AV has a Kaspersky scan option using using KAVDOS32.

Art, I still use your old KAV-UP and the KAVDOS32 it downloaded (like I
still have a copy of Bart's first PE 1.03 - that MS had him remove?) - both
of which still work well. But I thought you stopped using it because it was
unlicensed for distribution, or something. I would have thought the same
applied with Dave's supplying (the means to obtain) it.

Actually, I'm still surprised that KAVDOS32 apparently works well
enough on the NT based OS that David had no reservations using it. I
recall having trouble with it on my Win 2K machine. It would bomb out
sometimes. I never use it for anything anymore.

Insofar as the license goes, it's a mystery that it continues to work
years byeond the stated license expiration date. I look at KAVDOS32
quite differently from the old MWAV version that just expired. MWAV
has a curent payware alternative, while KAVDOS32 doesn't. You can't
find any KAV DOS version for purchase anywhere. It's been abandoned
and not supported for years by Kaspersky. So while it's strictly
illegal to use it ... Kaspersky never made it freeware ... I can't see
letting it go to waste, so to speak. If I found it still useful I'd
use it. There's no hacking required, whereas with KASFX it would now
have to be hacked. So the situations are quite different.

Thanks for the memories, as Bob Hope used to say :) Those were fun
days. The enthusiasm of some of the people I used to work with and try
to help was astounding.
Also still using kav 35133 on xp sp2

It will be a sad day when I'm forced to give that one up because of
the inevitable tide of obsolescence.

For a few brief weeks last year I had problems of one of the .avc file
updates being corrupted (no one file in particular). It's cleared up now,
however, though I'm unaware of having performed any obvious 'fix'! It
temporarily diminished the effectiveness of my cd, given that I've always
thought KAVDOS32 the most powerful of the 5 scanners on it!

I still use the two 9x systems - although very sparingly now, I must admit.
It's a close thing! I guess the main use I have for it is to keep updating
the cd so I have something to use on the machines of those less wary and
still using Win ME.

But it's high time I tested my scanners again. Reckon I need some modern
malware!

Yes, I used to do comparison testing between the GUI version 3.5 and
KAVDOS32 to try and determine if there were any differences in
detection. Better yet would be to use a trial of a later GUI version
as reference. There never were any differences using the collections
of malware I had. Seems Kaspersky relies primarily on the defs
defining its detection, and the engines themselves remain unchanged in
this regard. That's not 100% true, of course. There have been new
detection features added after 3.5. But they seem to have more to do
with later GUI versions having improved memory scanning. When
comparison testing on-demand using a clean PC, such features don't
enter into the picture.
