just won't quit

On one of my computers -- laptop -- Outlook 2003 just
won't quit when I connect to my work Exchange server over
a (Microsoft-standard) VPN. The Outlook window quits,
but the Outlook icon stays in the task bar and the
outlook.exe process keeps running in the Task Manager.
Trying to restart Outlook gives nothing until I kill the
outlook.exe task manually.

On the SAME computer, a different profile that connects
to a POP3 server works fine.

On a DIFFRENT computer, both the Exchange and POP3
profiles quit fine.

Both computers run Windows XP. The laptop runs home and
the other computer runs pro. The setups are pretty much
identical.

Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Do you have any PDA, fax or other software that uses Outlook installed on
the laptop?

I too experience the exact problem whether VPN or Directly
attached via corporate LAN. Have to kill the process and
then usually have to wait while Outlook 2003 rebuilds a
PST (800MB)when restarting.

Tried removing all PST and OST with same result.
Tried removing and re-installing 2003, same result.
Tried NOT delivering Mail directly to folder same result.
Disabled Virus Scanning with no change.
Tried UniCode and Non-Unicode PSTs

Connect to Exchange 5.5.
Sony Vaio GRX560 1.6Ghz P4, 512MB
XP Pro SP1 and all updates.
Office 2003 Pro with all updates (as of 30 Nov 03)
Visio 2003
Project 2003
NAV 2004 (Norton SystemWorks 2004)

If you hear of anything I too will be most interested.
TIA
Bill

Yes, I have FranklinCovey PlanPlus, but I uninstalled it
thoroughly (according to their instructions) and the
problem is still there.

I have a PDA on the computer where everything works OK,
but I've never installed ActiveSync or the PDA itself on
the computer with the problem.

While I do have MSFax installed, it isn't tied to outlook.

I also hae Palm Desktop 4.01 but it isn't tied to Outlook
either.

I have verified that the problem occurs ALL THE TIME if I
have exchange 5.5 deliver to a PST file but it does occur
most times accessing mail directly.

I do not have problems with POP3 however. Seems to be
relegated only to exchange.

Any other ideas?

Bill
