Also, I have read by mutiple users who have tried to install xp over vista,
(even inserting it before vista boots up, in the boot menu install) and they
say it does not work. Your right though, just by what other people have said,
i shouldnt have judged. I personally have not tried it, so i am unable to
give u my take on it. I just have read by a lot of people on download.com and
other places that it does not work. I'm just trying to save him a headache in
case, like other ppl have said, that xp wont allow him to install over vista.
I mean format and then install.
so ya, those are my reasons for having him try that, just trying to save him
a headache. I wouldnt want to have to have that annoyance of it not working.

ok here is the reasons i told him to buy xp proffesional.

1.) he said he was happy with xp pro.
2.) proffesional editions are always supported with microsoft security
updates longer then home editions. because profeesional is usaully used in
buisnesses, therefor, they are supported longer then home editions. Microsoft
always lets the proffesional editions have more time to upgrade. and if he
goes with home he might be able to have security updates to 2009, thats only
2 years. with professional version, microsoft might, (prob will) extend the
support agreement, untill 2010 or 2011. so that is why i recommended
proffesional. read on microsofts website with there support agreements, xp
pro is prob going to be supported longer then home edition. I like them both,
although i own home. I'm just saying he will have updates from microsoft
longer.

The support cycle is identical for both. See
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx

It really does not matter, if you wish to get home edition, do so. ether way
you have a great OS and it doesnt matter. I just know that proffesional
editions are usually supported longer then other versions.
3.) near where i live, home edition cannot be found, and i have looked
online as well, no success . I only can find the Professional version to buy.

I can't tell you anything about stores where you live, but if you have
been unable to find XP Home for sale online, you don't know the first
thing about searching the internet. It's extremely easy to find it for
sale by going to any of the well-known online sources. Or simply
google "XP Home.

If you mean trying to do an upgrade from Vista to XP, you certainly
can *not* do it. It's a downgrade and downgrades aren't supported.

However you can certainly replace Vista with XP by doing a clean
installation of XP in the normal way. When you do a clean
installation, it begins by formatting the drive, and what was there
before doesn't matter.

As xfile stated,

Have you seen this page:

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...8762&cc=us&dlc=en&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

(Or http://shurl.org/ohePa )

It looks like the Officejet 9100 All-in-One series printerm is
problematic. Which particular HP product are you using?

I've got the Officejet 5510V all-in-one
Understood. I'm not too crazy about Vista myself. Still, you may want to
check out microsoft.public.windows.vista.general .

Thanks for the reminder Daave -- I forgot what newsgroup I was posting
to. I had originally looked for a Vista group and didn't find it --
perhaps I need to update my listings.

I'm really trying to not let this get to me, but every day I'm
reminded, because there's always something I used to be able to use or
do that I can't anymore.

if i was you, what i would do if you have the money...is go to circuit city
or walmart and quick buy windows xp pro or home, (id buy pro.) format your
hard drive, (if you dont know how, go to download.com and look for hard drive
erasers, such as a program called eraser or kill disk. both good free
programs.) erase everything on the computer that you got, (after taking your
data off that you want.) and install xp on it. and sinse the computer u have
was designed for vista, it will go super fast on xp. xp has lighter memory
requierments, thus saving you the hassle of buying more ram, etc. xp should
be able to handle your hardware 2. most software venders that support vista
(or any current os) also support 2 os back of the current os. so, xp should
have a driver for your hardware. all i gotta say is, if u got the money, buy
xp fast! because its going to be taken out of stores soon......
os=operating system-windows 98, 2000, xp...etc....

Thanks for the suggestion. I did check it out and XP Home would cost
me $200 here. I don't have *that* kind of money. :-)

But thanks for the idea -- I frankly hadn't even thought of that.

I guess I'm just too cheap.

I read you had a home basic, thats too bad because Microsoft does have a
Downgrade program which allows you to downgrade any OEM Vista
Ultimate/Business to either XP Pro/64bit or Tablet edition.
Vista can certainly always be removed if one so desires (requires a purchase
of a license in your case though).
You could purchase an OEM edition instead of Retail of XP home which is
really cheap (around a 100$ or so) but you would disqualify/forfeit any free
support from MS as you would become your own OEM supplier.
I'ts a cheap fix so if you're pretty XP savvy i don't see any reason to not
buy an OEM edition.

Ofcourse i'm sorry You feel this way about Vista, but it is not Vista's
fault, the entire core system has been changed (which is why there are so
many "failures" associated with it).
Vista is still pretty new and all the hardware vendors and software
developers are probably working 45 hour shifts to make something remotely
compatible to Vista at the moment. give it till end of year and im sure
things look different then... XP had a rough patch at first but people simply
dont remember (or choose not to).
It's easy to attack a new system with all these new features, but trust me,
most are made for your safety, not to annoy you in any way.

Forgot to mention in addition to this, it is required you already own the
license of XP on an older PC, then transfer the license (OEM) to the new one
and then acquire a bypass key by calling the phone activation team (in case
anyone was wondering how it works to downgrade)
