Just joined a domain, and now ctrl-alt-del does not work to login.

I just joined a windows 2000 machine to a domain, however, now when I try to
log in, ctrl-alt-del does not work, so I cant even get onto the machine

These keyboards work fine on other machines, and enter,f1, etc... work on
this machine.


Any suggestions?

If you restart it and go into Safe Mode, does the three key sequence work and are able to login?

No. I tried: Safe Mode, Safe Mode command prompt, Safe mode with networking
support.

Interesting. If it doesn't work in safe mode, which loads no drivers, then it's starting to sound like a true hardware issue. I assume you've tried a different keyboard, or a USB keyboard, that is if this is a PS2 keyboard, or vice versa, depending on the motherboard and what type of keyboard it supports.

Was there a power outage or spike coinciding when you joined it, such as from a storm?

cant guarantee that it worked before joining the domain, as it was
set to auto-login.

Oh, you enabled auto-logon? Interesting. Did you previously disable the keyboard in the reg?

Let the machine come up. Go to another machine, open regedit, connect to this machine's registry. If you remember the location in the reg, re-enable the keyboard. If not, I will look for the key for you.

I didn't (or don't) think that you can auto-logon to a domain? He
should probably disable that while he remotely edits the registry.

Ok, good point, so you were able to join it to the domain with the keyboard.

Do you have any group policies applying to either this machine?

Were you able to connect to it's registry from another machine? Take a look at this link on how to disable it. Check the reg for these settings.

I wouldn't do it, but you can use TweakUI to configure it, or mess with the reg:

And I agree to disable that as well, if it is enabled, that is if he can connect to it.

I was also thinking if there's a GPO on it, or if someone else was playing a trick with a GPO reg entry, or even an app running, such as an old kiosk app, that disables it.

How long did you wait to see if the k-board would be detected??
I have seen Dell and Compaq boxes loaded from a Ghost image not detect
the k-board or rodent for close to 10 minutes.
Is there hard drive activity on the box??

That leads me to another question to Charles, the original poster: Do any of the lights light up on the keyboard, such as for caps lock, numlock, scroll, etc?

So the keyboard does work, but you can't press control-alt-delete to bring up the logon security box?

If so, at least we all now know the keyboard is actually recognized by the system.

Did you check the registry as suggested remotely from another machine to see if the keyboard is disabled or there is an autologon setting set?
