Just imagine a car manufacturer named, say, Microsoft that had produced 85% of the cars being driven in the civilized world.

Imagine all those three year old, or newer, cars needing engine tune-ups and other engine maintenance.

Imagine the maintenance is called . . . uh . . SP2!

Imagine that after said maintenance your can won't start, if it does start the top speed is limited to 35 mph, and/or the radio doesn't work or it only works on FM, and/or your left power window only works if you have the air conditioner on, and/or the trunk won't open unless the headlights are on, and/or, and/or, and/or . . .

Can you spell - - - S A T I R E ??
What a load of cack! an absolute stupid piece of
analogy. Comparing vehicles with computers?? I mean
please...since when did a computer or a piece of computer
software ever kill anyone??

Let's just say for a minute that all 85% of computer users switched to
another Operating system, give it 2 weeks and the same senseless badmouthing
of that OS starts.

Yep, that's the ancient joke that if cars were like
computers, the average car would be a Rolls Royce that
goes fifty thousand miles per hour, costs a dollar, and
crashes every day. Heard it. Besides the giggles, the
joke is actually meaningful to understand how different
cars and computers really are.
Imagine all those three year old, or newer,
cars needing engine tune-ups and other
engine maintenance.

Sure, my less than three year old car just had it's 2nd
recall work done yesterday. (Top-rated for reliability
no less.) I thought that was a good thing but not as
good as SP2 - ie my car manufacturer didn't add
additional safety and security features to prevent the
latest forms of theft on my car. It remains as
vulnerable to people stealing the HID headlamps as it was
known to be last year.
Imagine that after said maintenance your can won't
start, if it does start the top speed is limited to
35 mph,...

Yeah and image if the average car buyer reconfigured and
augmented his car as much as he did his computer.
Actually you don't need to imagine - visit some serious
car forums where people change the suspensions etc. and
see the carnage that occasionally results when their
performance improvements send their cars sideways in a
panic situation or cause the sway bars to punch a hole
through the body etc. etc. At least with computers,
people usually don't kill themselves and can always
recover to a good state if they bothered to back up.

It really goes back to the old joke though. Besides the
differences in the technology, the personal computer
market has really chosen, cheap, fast, easy, and fun over
reliable, controlled, and robust. This has been the case
for decades. Having worked on fault-tolerant systems for
part of my career I sometimes wish that wasn't so but
that's just a dream.

Change it to SP3 and it changes to only 97,000 hits. So
install SP3 instead!!! :-)

I was under the impression that most cars needed 15,000 mile maintenance,
and considering the average annual mileage where I live is 14,000... it
seems most new cars would need service in under three years. Not to mention
the 60,000 mile maintenance, which is typically around 4 years or so.

Now, I don't know about anyone else, but in 6 years of owning and using a
computer I've spent probably 1000 bucks total... first to initially get
stuff, then just recently to upgrade to all new stuff. If only my car was
as reliable as my computer... I've spent 6 times the purchase price of the
car on maintenance in the past 3 years, so you can see how it would be nice
to have something as sturdy as my computer system. Also, if replacement
(oem or aftermarket) equipment prices were comparable to computer parts,
replacing a transmission would be like 200 bucks instead of 2150 =) Anyway,
just my opinion..

I bet your Car was manufactured by Dell! Most times it is
3rd party software that is causing issues with the SP2.
Most times, customer ignorance of their systems, and the
upkeep of them is to blame. MS has done a lot of testing,
and it is up to the 3rd party software manufactures to
pull up there socks, and do the testing of SP2 on their
software. To blame MS about computer mistakes is silly;
it's like blaming the parents of a serial killer. Most
errors are self inflected, whether it be by Aware, or
other virus related issues. Both of which are handled for
free from Microsoft technical support.
Thanks!

What gives you the idea that I can?

Please note: Because I can't hit a major league pitched baseball out of the part it doesn't mean I have no right to note when the batter strikes out.

Not being able to do something better than is being done does not negate ones powers of observation in noting when said thing is being screwed up by others.
