Im upgrading a friends computer, I advised him to purchase XP retail which
he did. He has win98 first edition on his computer purchased at a computer
show 3 years ago.

But he didnt get the CDs with the computer, it was pre installed

Is there any way to install this? He paid for the win98 and wants to use it
for this version of XP, then its okay to zap the old 98.

But if I wanted to change over to XP home from win2000 Pro, my expensive
win2000 Pro system wouldnt qualify for the upgrade? Not that Id want to,
but this seems rather odd.

Did this just suddenly become this way or has it always been like that?

Windows 2000 does not qualify for upgrading to
Windows XP Home Edition. You would need Windows
XP Professional. To upgrade the Windows 98 installation,
insert the Windows XP Home Edition CD in the CD drive
and select the default "Upgrade" option when the setup
screen appears.

Okay thanks, these articles are extensive and I havent done this in a while.
I was hoping to install on a new blank hard drive but it looks easier to
just go get the full version
