Just a black screen!

How do I resolve? My laptop says a missing windows file is the culprit.
But how do I rectify the situation? I've tried almost all the function keys
upon startup with no success. I'm at my wits end.

From the Command Prompt (or Start; Run, type cmd and press return to get to
it), type chkdsk c: /r and press enter. It will ask you to
Restart; do so. Watch the screen for messages as it runs. There should be
5 sets of tests it goes through.

If that doesn't help, then at the Command Prompt:

Type in sfc /scannow and press return.
Follow the screen.
That should get it going again. You might have to redo some updates,
depending on what files get replaced.
