Jumpy! Yes, jumpy! screen

Computer Club member's Windows XP SP3 and all subsequent updates. When any
program is open, the space for entering data constantly jumps up and down 3
to 4 inches. As long as the mouse pointer is not in the body all is calm. 4
or 5 updates were laboriously installed by stabbing at the check box.

I opened Internet Explorer. As long as the mouse pointer was not on web page
info, all was calm. Point to the page and the page would jump.

I opened Microsoft Office Word 2003. When attempting to type anything the
interior of the box would jump in the same manner.

I then opened Microsoft Office Outlook. It was set to show folders on the
left, message headers at top and the message below. As I moved the pointer
around the screen, each would jump as the pointer would pass over.

I'm stumped!

If you are using a mouse but are also using a keyboard with a touchpad,
see what happens when you disable the touchpad. Some folks set the
sensitivity so high that your palm approaching the touchpad get sensed.

I held my hands completely away from all controls and it kept jumping.
Thanks anyhow!

Go into the mouse properties, and see if you can disable the
vertical wheel scrolling. If you have a Microsoft mouse, it's
in the scrolling tab. If this fixes it, you have a problem with
the scrolling wheel on your mouse. If you can't disable the
wheel scrolling, try another mouse.

Ian, Thanks for trying. I took over a USB non-wheeled mouse, removed the
batteries from the wireless mouse. No change.

I couldn't enter MSCONFIG as it would constantly scroll up all prior entries
in the Run commmand box. I was able to open MSCONFIG in Safe mode by typing
it into Notepad and copy and paste into the Run box. I went to the Start tab
and disabled HP Software Update, Messenger, Windows Media Player and HP
Digital Imaging.

On restart, all was calm. When I get time I'll return and turn one at a time
back on until I find the culprit.

The scroll section, to the right of some touchpads, could cause the
scrolling up of the entries. The down-cursor key might do that if it
were stuck down too.

There is no touchpad. It's a desktop computer.
