Jumping Mouse Icon and Toolbar

Part of the bottom-right toolbar (the arrow on which to click to see all
icons, and the little Google window) and the mouse icon (arrow and hourglass)
keep jumping back and forth. Also a bell tone keeps sounding randomly. The
computer has become sluggish. This happened once before and seemed to clear
up on its own. I have rebooted several times, with no change in the problem.
The computer is an Acer Aspire 1800 and usually works very well. I have XP
Home Edition. Norton antivirus scan was clean. PestPatrol scan was clean.
A-squared scan showed 26 cookies, which it deleted. I also have a firewall. I
ran disk cleanup and deleted temp files. Also ran disk analysis which said
defragmenting not needed. The analysis showed 46% of disk is available. Is
this caused by something that got by all the security? What can I do to fix
this problem? Thank you!

1/2 youre problem(s) are probably due to all the 3rd party garbage that you
run.A-square showed 26 cookies...Takes a real genuis to locate those...

A bell tone? Perhaps your computer is overheating. Random errors usually
point to hardware, although your feeling that the sound is random may be
subjective. Try and observe closely and make a note of what you are
doing when the sound happens to determine if it really is random or is
connected with an action or program/process running (such as an instant
messaging program's sounds).

It really is impossible to tell what the issues are without seeing your
computer. We need to narrow down the troubleshooting. What changed
between the time things worked and the time they didn't? Do any updates?
Install any drivers (video)?

The cookies are irrelevant. Andrew E. is a troll and you can ignore what
he said. Since you've done the scanning, it probably is not a malware
issue although you can look over the general malware removal steps at
this link and see if they match what you've done:

You might try clean-boot troubleshooting to see if something running in
the background is causing the problem:

Well, yesterday I was word processing and putting up with the sluggishness --
and freezing when I tried to work within a table I had made -- while the
toolbar and mouse icon kept jumping, and after a while I noticed that the
jumping had stopped and the computer seemed to be back to normal, and is
still so as of now on Monday morning. Go figure. So it appears to be an
intermittent problem that has occurred twice, a couple of months apart, and
each time seems to have resolved on its own. None of the scans I've run have
identified a virus or whatever. Is it possible that this is a glitch in
Windows or MS Word itself?

There is no way for me to answer that question because I can't
troubleshoot your machine hands-on. I rather doubt it is a "glitch" in
the software since it is random. Software errors tend to appear in a
more regular way; i.e., when you do "x" in a program - "y" happens.
That's not carved in stone, of course. To be on the safe side, I think
I'd do some hardware troubleshooting starting with the RAM and the hard
drive. Also check for overheating issues.

I appreciate the advice. Since I'm a computer user but not a techie I really
have no idea how to troubleshoot RAM and hard drive and check overheating. I
know enough to do routine maintenance (disk clean-up, defrag, Windows Update,
virus scan) and that's it. Is there a way to do what you suggest using some
sort of online resource? How would I do it otherwise? Thanks again!

I'm sorry, I thought I had already given you the link but here it is
