I am trying to connect a second hard disk
via USB port. Need advice on jumper setting
master.slave on it. My Winme os has one
hard disk partitioned into C: and D: partitions.
E: and F: are DVD writer and dvd player.
Thanks for the advice.

Set your C drive to master or it may have a master with slave , jumper
position .

Set your 2nd HD to slave .

How to Prevent Drive Letters from Changing After You Add a Hard Disk or
a CD-ROM (Q282530)

The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition
Microsoft Windows 98
Microsoft Windows 95

C disk setting: { master }
D disk setting: { slave }
External drive connected via USB port setting: { master}
I have exact same setup and external hard drive via USB always has to be
jumpered master!

External hard drives ALWAYS have to be jumpered as Master for your system to
be able to "see it ".
You Internal hard drive also has to be jumpered as Master.
If you have a "separate" second Internal hard drive installed it must be
jumpered as Slave.
DVD ROM always jumpered as Master
If you only have CD\RW then it is always jumpered as Master
Second CD\ROM always jumpered as Slave.

I hope that this info will help.

Another important setup you must be aware of is the position of the ribbon
cable that attaches to your hard drive/cd rom and then to your motherboard.
{INTERNAL DRIVES}
You MUST ALWAYS attach the end of the ribbon cable to the MASTER drives! The
middle connector ALWAYS attaches to the SLAVE drives!

Mine run on cable select

This depends on which channel the drive is installed. If on the
primary channel then it should be slave, if on the secondary channel
then it should be master unless there is another drive already on that
channel.

I disagree. I have the CD/DVD jumpered as slave on the secondary
channel. There is no other drive on that channel in either machine.

I will not comment on external drives as I do not have such an animal.

Why? Are you jumpering the drives as Cable Select?

Thanks all of you for the valuable information
on the experience. The result is that
External USB port had disk can work
smoothly on master/slave/cable select jumpers.
Perhaps may not work if one
removes/loses jumper setting clip?

On my ME pc I simply removed all jumpers, and normally it's
automatically the slave HD. On ALL my HDs there are tiny symbols to show
how to set jumpers.

But it is also a way, I think, to go into the BIOS and decide which
drive is the boot drive, first and second ...

Hi Peter. set your USB drive to be Master. OK ?. ..J

I put a HD in an external casing which was attached to USB. Curiously, I
found that I could transfer files most of the time, but I occasionally
had problems. The same thing happens on our Maxtor drive at the office.
It "mostly works", but often tries to unmount itself arbitrarily. Very
wierd. I've heard a similar thing reported by people running Linux, so I
don't think it's just me who's experiencing the problem. Anyone got any
ideas what may be wrong?

I came to the conclusion that these USB ports might not be all they're
cracked up to be. Eventually I decided that my external HD at home was
too much fiddle, so I opened up the case and mounted it internally. The
HD has never given any trouble since then.

I'd like to find out what's wrong with the Maxtor, though.

Have heard of the USB connectors being a bit of a curse, especially the
front ones. They must of course make good contact. One item I read told of
having to remove the front sockets and resolder the connections.
best wishes..J
