I know there are differing opinions, but now that 6 months have gone
by, and there has been test of time, I would welcome CURRENT

That option is only available through about January 2008 as far as OEM
is concerned.

You may get many diverse opinions on this question.
For me, Windows Vista has been performing Well for about 11 months.

Windows vista will continue to improve as 3rd parties continue to
improve their drivers and Windows Vista compatible programs.

I use a mix of Windows XP and Windows Vista on my computers.
There is no need to upgrade simply because there is a new operating
system.
Windows XP will probably be supported for several more years and most
should wait until the need for a new computer or other requirements
suggest upgrading to windows Vista.

Running many flavors of Windows OS's on a home/small business network, from
NT4 to Vista.

Vista Business is on my personal Dell XPS1210 laptop, and I really do enjoy
the "experience".

I've been through the first release of many OS's, so expected to have some
problems (beta tested both Win3.11 and 95), but they have been far fewer
than I actually expected to encounter.

The key to success with Vista, as it has been with each succeeding OS since
DOS 6, can be summed up in two words: ample (read more) resources, and
updated drivers ... absolutely nothing new here.

It is also understandable that the _many_ folks who have only experienced XP
would lack the necessary perspective to make accurate judgments about the
first release of a completely new OS, and you can clearly see that on this
forum.

That said, the Vista laptop is twice the machine of my Win2K desktop and
about 75% as responsive, but a bit faster than two older XP boxes with less
than half the memory. Those of us still running 32 bit have a hurdle to jump
with regard to RAM utilization ... for someone who once paid $800 for 16MB
of RAM, that 2+ GB is the now sweet spot is a little surrealistic.

What I most dislike about Vista is that it is arguably a reflection of the
culture that's spawned its underpinnings. MSFT's attitude about making the
customer pay for software, then pay again and again for the sins of piracy,
is despicable.

Basically, the Internet affords them the opportunity to ride rough shod over
the paying customer, and what little respect they've ever evinced for same
has disappeared in the maw of corporate greed.

Vista is marginally better than XP and will only get better over time
just like XP got better over time. If you are getting a new pre built
computer for sure get Vista simply because it is the future AND since
you're buying a new computer it should (keep your fingers crossed)
have hardware that has been tested and "certified" to run with Vista.
That only leaves you with legacy software you may wish to still run
and perhaps some older printer, scanner or other "must have" device.
If you budget doesn't include funds for these two common extras IF you
need to get new ones because the old ones won't run under Vista and
there are no plans to offer Vista drivers for your older hardware then
maybe Vista isn't for you, otherwise in my opinion it would be foolish
to not go with Vista IF you are sticking with Windows and not testing
the waters of Linux or some other OS.

My beef, is Vista as a upgrade isn't worth the money you spend to
upgrade to it, solely just to upgrade. The only reason I did was my
old motherboard died and I saw no point sticking with XP as long as I
was building a new system.

While I like what's new in Vista except for the useless UAC, what is
new is mostly eye candy and some tweaking under the hood. Welcomed
yes, but hardly worth the typical asking prices of around $200 for
what is mainly a face lift.

and how is that any different from the costs of goods and services for
expenses resulting from shrinkage, natural disasters, etc??? I presume
you are a big boy--you should have learned by now that THE CUSTOMER
ALWAYS PAYS.

If you want to see greed you should have watched today's episode of Flip
This House. Some bozo buys a house that should have been condemned,
then he whines about how over budget he is on the repairs, as he
negotiates a cheaper price from the subs. He couldn't have been
sleezier if he tried. Why the hell should they have cut they prices
just so he can make a larger profit on the flip??
