Service Pack Release Date

I have read some of the queries of a month or so ago about a release date for
the SP for Vista. Does anyone have any new information? In Feb. I purchased a
new laptop with Vista Home Premium installed. It has turned out to be the
worst decision I have made. I am just about ready to format the HDD and
install XP. However, if the SP for Vista is going to be released in the next
3-4 months, I may wait.

Any information will be appreciated and thanks. Norm.

When Microsoft is ready to announce a firm release date for SP1,
that will announce it on their web site www.microsoft.com

I would guess sometime between Labor Day and Thanksgiving. I have no
crystal ball and your guess is as good as mine. However I feel
Microsoft knows they really messed up this time and are rushing to get
SP1 out since for SOME people Vista is as bad as ME was.

You may be better off posting details of the particular issue(s) you're
having, rather than holding your breath for a fix-all Service Pack.

A Service Pack won't instantly provide you with all the knowledge you need
to resolve particular problems. In those cases, you'll either need to do the
homework by reading up yourself, or ask the advice of others who have
already done so.

Norm--

Two things are pretty clear. The first is what's in SP1 and it's not the
answer to your problems although it does have Win RE with its tools
including Startup Repair that will be available for everyone--and the second
is that you haven't given us anything to work with and we might be able to
turn things around dramatically. While I find much to criticize in Vista, I
find a good deal of very careful work excellent work the more you drill into
it (much never appreciated by the average user).

I understand your frustration--many of us have little glitches that can
frustrate the hell out of us and consume time--but I'm willing to bet that
if you got specific for us, we could whip your Vista into remarkably good
shape very quickly.

This afternoon WMP wouldn't play music; I didn't blame Vista or WMP or spend
a lot of time searching for errors in Event Viewer--I just said "it's
software--it's not perfect and rebooted and having used Vista since July 05,
I have only seen that happen once.

I would challenge you to be very specific and tell us every last one of your
problems with Vista, and we can fix them fast. There is some great talent
on this group, but you have to give them specifics to work with and your
overall conclusion that Vista is so bad you want to format and sub XP for it
is just robbing yourself of some of the excellent features that work
remarkably well in Vista. I'm far from a fanboy, but with all respect I
know that we can turn Vista around for you. But you have to give us
problems to work with.

If I were to email you SP1 now, it would not be the cure for what ails Norm
and Vista. But if you would tell us your problems in a specific list, we
can make them go away.

Waiting for a service pack is USELESS because all patches and updates are
constantly released via Windows Update.

Interesting note - I never had any problems with ME and I have no problems
with Vista.

Has MS released these updates yet? I prefer to download from MS rather than
a third party.

They need to do something quick to fix the mess in the initial
release. The articles abound about how business are not moving to
Vista. Dell is selling hardware with the choice of xp or
vista.........has this ever happened so long after a release of a new
MS OS?

Yes. Every time.

It took until mid 2004 for XP to overtake Win 98 and 2000. Vista has
only been available for 7 months.

IE 7 will not let me open the IT site - says the operation was aborted and
promptly closed the webpage! Guess I have to wait for the Automatic Update?

I'm with you. Been running Vista for 4 months now, and ran ME for 2
years back then, and both OS's were and are trouble free for me.

Sorry. Both 64-bit links worked fine for my machine and the 32-bit links
worked fine on my wife's machine.

My understanding is that SP1 beta updated over the first one was released
today. I have no way to verify this as I read it in a news release that
gave no information.

No way bubba, you could not buy a dell pc with ME on it 7 months after
Xp came out. Businesses may of had some agreement to keep getting ME,
but the consumer could not get ME when ordering a PC from dell's
website. Not even close.

This is an unusual situation and Dell is talking unusual steps to
insure that a bad OS (vista) does not kill their sales.
