JPG file type

I am trying to save a number of jpg files to my desk top by right clicking on
the file and choose save picture as...., a prompt came up with a file name
box and a save as type box. I can only input into the file name box but not
the save as type box. The box is blank with no drop down options nor allow
me to input the jpg file type. How do I fix the save as type box which would
reinstate the drop down options or allow me to input the applicable file type
(although I can manually add .jpg to the file name on the file name box but
that's only band-aid and I still need to fix the save as type box on a
permanent basis) ?

Sorry, it isn't clear to me what you are trying to do. Do these files
start out as jpg files (with the jpg extension) or are you trying to
change them to jpg files?

If you are trying to change the type of a picture from jpg to
something else, or from something else to jpg, you need to be aware
that what you have to do is a lot more than just change the extension
part of the name to or from jpg. It's not the name that's critical,
its what's in the file itself that's critical. To do this, you need to
open the file in a program that has the ability to make the change you
want, and then use that program to change the type--*not* just the
name.

As an analogy, if you buy a Ford automobile and on the part of the car
where it says "Ford," you paint over it and change it to "Chevrolet,"
you've changed its name, but you haven't made it a Chevrolet.

OK, what you want is a graphics editor that can convert filetypes. I suggest
the free download of this great application for converting picture files to
other filetypes.

IrfanView - one of the most popular viewers worldwide:

The files I am trying to save are jpg files and I am not trying to change
anything, just saving them in the same type and extension to my desktop but
unfortunately the save as type box is inactive and doesn't have drop-down
extension options or allow manual type-in.

OK, good.

Then I'm not sure how you're trying to do this. There shouldn't be any
"save as type box."

There's more than one way to do this, but if you want them on your
desktop, here's an easy way: just right-drag them there from wherever
they are. When you release the right mouse button, you'll be asked
whether you want to move, copy, or create a shortcut. Just choose
copy. The result will be that their names and extensions will be
identical to the way they were.

The files are all jpg files and I didn't try to change the file extension. I
simply tried to save them in the same format and extension as the original on
my desktop but unfortunately the save as type box is inactive and there is no
drop-down option for extension types or permit manual type-in.

It seems to me that there is a basic misunderstanding arising here.

If you are trying to save jpegs in their original format to some folder
where you wish to keep them, there is normally absolutely no problem in doing
this. We can't actually "see" what you yourself are seeing, which makes it a
little difficult to help.

But one thing does help and that is to make sure that the extensions such as
".jpg" are visible to you. If you go to Control Panel, Classic View, Folder
Options, click to open, then open the second tab ("view"). Find the box "Hide
extensions for known file types" and uncheck the box. Then all file
extensions should henceforth be visible to you. If you are "saving as" to any
folder, and you are naming the picture, make sure that the extension ".jpg"
is there. If it is not there, then type in ".jpg". This because sometimes
even in Photoshop the picture will not always re-create its own file
extension on its own.

I hope the above is of some use to you and sorry if it doesn't help you.

Alice, what program are you using to try saving these jpg files? I do
not see any "save" options in Windows Explorer when I right click on a
jpg file or select options from the File drop-down menu. I can copy,
delete, rename, ro send the files elsewhere.

Sorry unable reply earlier due away.
I am sorry for not mentioning this in my initial query, the jpg file I am
trying to save are from websites. Normally if you right click on a jpg file
on a website, a 'save as' box appears which contains a file name box and a
save as type box. Both boxes are usually prefilled with file name and jpg
file type respectively already but I can manually change both should I want
to save them using a different file name or file type. If I use IE to save
these files, the save as type box is prefilled with jpg type (or I can click
on the drop down icon to choose a different file type), but using Firefox or
Google Chrome, the save as type box is blank and inactive which does not
allow manual input or drop down choices ?
