Help! Our PC is saving all jpegs and gifs it sees when we
are on the net to a temporary internet files folder.
W'ere talking about 2,000 images in one day. We cannot
simply delete the folder as it contains necessary
cookies. This is just happenning now. What is going on?
We have run Spybot, Ad-aware, and antivirus. All that
comes up is 4 files called "new.net". All our online
programs (Explorer, kAZAA, etc.) are OK. What is causing
this?

In IE6, go to TOOLS - OPTIONS - General tab - clear temporary files

That's how Temporary Internet Files (TIF) work, CL. WYSIWYG. You can
configure IE to delete TIF at the end of every session or do so manually.

These days most of us are recommending HijackThis to identify and assist in
the removal of these bad guys. Post your files to the forum mentioned on
the first URL above.

That is the default behavior of most web browsers; they cache files and
images for faster page loading on subsequent visits to sites. Check your
cache settings in IE or whatever browser you use, you can usually set
the maximum disk cache size.

You can clear temp. internet files without deleting your
cookies that is a separate option.

That's the way it has always worked with Windows. The reason for this dates back to when Internet connections were almost all dialup, and slow speeds at that (waiting 5 to 15 seconds or more for each page to load was not unusual). The intent is to keep from having to download the same web page content every time you go back to a site, or the common elements when moving between pages on the same site, reducing the page load time. It's not so important today if you are on a broadband connection since the images and other page content download so fast that you hardly notice. The default size allocated for Temporary Internet Files by Internet Explorer is much to big in most cases. You can change that by clicking on Tools, Internet Options, then the Settings button on the General tab. I typically use only 5 MB, but others might recommend a higher setting, certainly not over 100 MB in any case I would say.
