jpeg became file

Somehow my digital photos no longer have the file type
jpeg. Now they are listed simply as "file", how can I
change the file type back to jpeg. I'm asking so that I
can upload images to my memory card and have them
processed.
Thanks

Are you saying there is no file extension? Or
has the file extension changed to something
other than .jpg?

What happens if you rename the files and add
the .jpg extension?

Open My Computer.
Click on your hard drive to highlight it
Click on Tools on the top bar
Click on the View tab in the opening window
Scroll down to item 11 "Hide extensions for known file types" and remove the
check in the box if there is one there.
Now see if .jpg is listed after the file names.

Even if .jpg is not after the file names, change the view of this photo
folder to Details. Under the column header "Type" you should see "JPEG
Image" if these are indeed .jpg files.

Ok, I too had the same problems, but fixed it by using the steps provided.

One question: Why does this happen? Why can't we just save it as the name
w/out the extension like in Win 98? And why doesn't Win XP recognize the
..jpg or .bmp unless we follow these steps?

In Win 98, the extension was added just like with XP. You always saved a
file as a "File type" and the extension .jpg, .bmp, .doc, etc. is
automatically added.
The difference is 98 lists the file names with .jpg etc added after the name
while XP gives you a choice, but the default is not to add the extension
after the file name. However, if you select the Details view, the third
column is File Type and even if the file name does not have the extension
..jpg you will see JPEG listed under File Type. So XP does recognize the file
type but I certainly don't know why they made this change.
