Journal Categories and entries

I have a couple of Journal issues I'd love to resolve:

I want to start using the Journal to track project-related comms. However,
in "Category View" for some reason very weird category names (some
alphanumerical, and some names that I don't recognise) show up.

The 'weird' ones don't appear to contain any entries yet I can't delete
then.
Also, they seem to change overnight.
How can I resolve this and/or delete them?

And the last confusing issue: last week's word documents have magically
disappeared ...

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

PS - when I said that last week's word docs have disappeared, I meant from
the journal.
