I have got a doubt, i have two computers at my home, both of them have win
xp prof sp2 and they are connected through a crossover enet cable and i
created a network connection on both the computers and made one computer as
GUEST and another as HOST, when i click MY NETWORK PLACES - under NETWORK
TASKS - i click on VIEW WORKGROUP COMPUTERS, i get

Error: " Shiv - Gokul is not accessible. You might not have permissions to
use this network resource. Contact the system administrator of this server to
find out if you have access permissions "

I have the same workgroup name created on both the computers and i also
have the simple file sharing check box checked

Can anyone suggest me what to do to get rid of this error message and also
aceess the resources on both my computers to and fro...

Bye advanced thanks for any information.

What's the complete and exact error? "Contact the system administrator of this
server to find out if you have access permissions ..." then what?

Hi chuck,

Thanks for the help in the very first place.

Well I do not get anything else as an error messgae apart from what i
mentioned earlier and some more detrails which might help you in diagnoising
the problem better.

I checked for the lights of the enet card at teh back of both the comps they
are blinking.

The ipadress on the

Host comp: 169.254.94.36
Guest Comp: 169.254.212.15

When i try to ping the host from guest or vice versa i get only one result
request timed out.

thanx for the help

Looks like your PCs are not in the same IP subnet. The should both have
IPA=a.b.c.d, where the a.b.c is the same and the d's are unique. And, they
should both use a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. Try setting the IPAs as
static IPAs, using IPCONFIG commands (Start -> Run -> CMD, then type
IPCONFIG/? for the next steps). That should fix the PING problem, and
may fix everything.

Those IP addresses are fine, and they're in the same subnet.
Something else is causing the problem.

When there's no DHCP server to assign an IP address, Windows
automatically assigns a random address in the 169.254.x.x range, with
a subnet mask of 255.255.0.0.

255.255.255.0 is the most common subnet mask in Windows networks, but
other values are equally valid.

OK, you have layers 1 & 2 connectivity. That is, you state that the equipment
shows connection, and the 2 computers both have good IP addresses.

So check for the personal firewalls, on each computer. Make sure each computer
trusts 169.254.x.x.

Well chuck your website is of great help, and coming down to the problem the
issue seems to be resolved, i am able to veiw two shared folders on the host
computer

1) Shared Docs on Host ---- Under LOCAL NETWORK OPTION
2) SHared Docs on Guest ---- Under INTERNET option in MY NETWORK PLACES

I am abe to access the files in shared folder (SHared Docs on Guest) from
the computer which is acting as HOST when it comes to the second computer i
am able to view only one shared folder in MY NETWORK PLACES
Shared Docs on Guest.

When i click on VIEW WORKGROUP COMPUTERS in the second computer acting as
GUEST i get an error
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Error : \\Shivaramcomp is not accessible. You might not have permission to
usethe network resource.Contact the administrator f the server to find out if
you have access permissions.
Access is denied

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When i click on VIEW WORKGROUP COMPUTERS on th HOST i get two computer ICONS

1)Guest( Gokul )
2)Host ( ShivaramComp )

I am able to access both the computers when i click on them.

Now my question is why am i not able to establish a two way connection
betweenn the two computers or is this the way it works.... a bit confusing.

ABOVE ALL CAN YOU TELL ME WHICH ICON SHOULD I CLICK ON TO CREATE A NETWORK
CONNECTION

Is it by clicking create a network connection and choosing the fourth option
setup an advanced connection.

create a advanced connection
connect directly to another computer
Host on Shivaramcomp
Guest on Secondcomp - Gokulcomp
Selected LPT1 and clicked next
selected all the users and clicked next
Finish

This did not work so i choosed a different method

I clicked SETUP A HOME OR SMALL OFFICE NETWORK and created a connectoid
which resolved the problem, however i still find teh LAN icon saying limited
or no connectivity and i am able to ping both the comp's from each other

Thanks for every help

Make sure that the Guest account is properly activated, for network access, on
both computers.
