Networking two computers using a USB Cable

Any help would be appreciated as I have tried a lot of things so far!

Basically, I have two computers, the old one with Windows Xp and a new one
with Windows XP Media Centre Edition. The new computer is connected to the
internet with an ADSL modem. I have used an USB cable to connect the two
computers. I have used the correct USB cable (USB Networking Cable which is
designed to connect two computers together) and so far I have had the
following successes:

- managed to install the drivers and get the computers to regognice the USB
cable as a Network Adaptor.
- managed to get the two computers connected with both showing up when I
select the 'View Workgroup Computers' option in Network Connections (on both
computers)
- managed to run the Network Connection Wizard setting up the new computer
as the internet connection and the old as the one that connects through the
LAN.
- managed to ping both computers with each other using the automatically
assigned IP addresses and the computer network names
- manged to get the connection icon on the taskbar up showing that the LAN
is connected on both computers
- managed to ping external internet sites (yahoo.com, etc) from the old
computer which means that the ping must be going though the LAN and through
the new computer and ADSL modem to the outside world.

Now, this is where I am stumped as I cannot do the two basic things I want
to which are:

- Share files between the two computers; I get the '\\othercomputer is not
accessible ...' message. I have enabled simple file sharing on both machines
and set the permissions on both machines that the respective folders are
accesible to allnetwork users
- Use the browser (IE) and email (Outlook) which are on the old computer. I
either have errors connecting or timeout

I am fairly convinced that the two computers are connected and data (pings
only so far) can go between them but I have reached the limit of my knowledge
on this so would welcome any advice on how to go about solving these.

Well some success; I managed to get the ICS working, albeit breifly (my new
machine, the host, seems a bit tempremental and reboots) but I did download
email using Oulook 97 on the client machine and use IE. Still no joy on the
file sharing.

Now I seem to be able to get up a password box for the old computer but even
typing in the right password still does not allow access
