joining two computers together in a network one xp other 98s

have both cards installed and connected but each shows the
network cable unplugged what procedures are to my disposal
for activation of both pci cards
 
G'Day Al,
You must EITHER connect each PC to a Hub using standard
cables, OR connect PC direct to PC using a CROSSOVER
cable.
