Joining domain over VPN

I have a laptop that lost it's connection to it's home
domain while I was away from the home network and tried
to join a different domain. Now I need to rejoin the home
domain but I will be away for some months and I can only
connect via VPN. My original domain connection was setup
for a VPN connection also but now when I try to rejoin
the original domain it seems I have to have a hard
network connection. When trying to rejoin the domain it
won't let me do it saying, Cannot find the Domain and I
cannot find the domain unless I'm connected (via VPN?)
and I can't connect to the VPN unless I'm logged in to
the domain. Catch 22? Anyone got any ideas about this?
Thanks in advance,
RMD

This is generally not possible unless there's a VPN site link between the
two networks. You do know that you can access domain resources without
belonging to the domain, right? Just pass the domain credentials along when
mapping a drive, or opening your Exchange mailbox in Outlook, etc -

Thanks for the input Lanwrench.
Yes, I saw that it is possible to access the other
domain, at least log onto the VPN to the other domain but
I have not been able toaccess any file folders or other
resources on that domian throught he VPN. I don't know
why. My main problem however, is that I need to get back
as part of that other (original) domain because Symantec
has locked me out of getting virus updates without the
original domain membership. There's always something. It
sure woudl be helpful at least to be able to find some of
the files on that domain though in case you have some
pointers about how to access the files over the semi
functional VPN.
Thanks
